“Buffalo City of Light – Electric Illumination – since 1896”
There was a day when downtown Main Street was canvased with all sorts of handsome advertising signs, theater blades, marquees, etc. I’m not talking about the cheap, ugly billboards that deface this city, I’m talking about signage that doesn’t make you want to avert your eyes. Case in point is this new branding mural that now graces the side of the Wurlitzer Flats building at 674 Main Street.
Back in June, we posted that this building is going to be the future home of 42 North Brewing Company. That alone is pretty exciting. The presence of this new mural is just the icing on the cake for this building/project, which is going to be a real gem for downtown Buffalo when it is complete. Adding to the visual pizzazz, a double-faced 42 North compass-shaped sign with marquee bulbs will also be installed on the building.
Drew Blum renovated the former Tent City Building with commercial space on the ground floor and one large apartment on each of the four upper levels. The circa-1895 Beaux Arts style building was erected to house the business of A.E. Perren, a manufacturer of carriages, sleighs and harness. For sixty years, it served as a store for the Buffalo Wurlitzer Company which vacated the site in 1977. Tent City-Washington Surplus Center occupied the building until early-2020.
