John Bacon at Soundlab

Tonight!

John Bacon and Multi-Jazz Dimensions announce the release of the CD "Boxing Day", featuring duo and solo performances by John Bacon on drums and percussion and Paul Bley on piano. This CD, recorded the day after Christmas in Rochester, New York, captures these two musicians collaborating spontaneously in the studio on a series of eclectic improvisations. Bley is a seminal contributor to the history of Jazz music through his exploration of free jazz, interactive piano trio and early electric improvisational music. Bacon has explored a variety of musical frontiers including avant-jazz with Roswell Rudd, new music with the Maelstrom Percussion Ensemble and Latin Jazz with Wendell Rivera. A Co-production of Multi-Jazz Dimensions, Soundlab and Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center. www.johnbaconjr.com

BRO met yesterday with Robbie Takac and Alex Kelly, to talk about Robbie’s new musical project, Amungus. Robbie remains well-loved in Buffalo for never forgetting his roots despite a 20-year career as a professional rock star. His label, ChameleonWest Records, has produced 13 albums in town over the past five years, his foundation is responsible for over seven youth programs, and Amungus is poised to release a debut album, complete with 13 videos on greenscreen backgrounds for VJs to layer in clubs across the world. In our first clip, Robbie describes the project in detail.

Alex Kelly, the main vocalist on the album, is a classic Buffalo story of success in reverse. She went from modeling on the runways of New York City to school in Buffalo – but it was here she was able to make her breakthrough into her music career with Takac …

My first encounter with Chae Hawk, a/k/a Noble Truth, was at an unspeakable hour of the morning outside a venerable alcohol delivery station in the Allentown district. While everyone else was relaxing and winding down, Chae Hawk and dj.dstar were quietly working the crowd with flyers, talking to everyone there about their upcoming show. I knew it to be the sign of a dedicated musician, who is not just in it for the glory or the girls, but really believes in the project and what they have to say. Noble Truth has been a fine example of this ethic, at an especially young age, which speaks to a long and fruitful career to come.

In fine, grand tradition, he's retiring his stage moniker, Noble Truth, and returning to Chae Hawk. The ceremony, "Death of a Noble Truth", will be held at Soundlab on Saturday night. Fittingly, he's reitiring the name at its peak, having just won an Artvoic…

A Mystery Wrapped in an Enigma

Well, that's what I think of when I think of the petite Icelandic angelically-voiced Bjork. Her new album Volta will be her first since 2004. The album is due for general release May 8, but you can attend a listening party Friday at Spot Coffee and New World Records on Elmwood, where the album will be played in its entirety.

The listening party will be held from 6-8pm. "The new CD will be played and there will be Bjork prizes that you can enter to win, and also some cool Bjork gifts for anyone who pre-orders the new CD from New World Record," says Joseph Murray, of Warner/Elektra/Atlantic, who are sponsoring the event. Grab your swan dress and go check it out!

Friday, May 4, 6 -- 8 PM Free Spot Coffee/New World Records 765 Elmwood, 14222, 882-0225

As you may have already read in this morning's Buffalo News, the Music is Art Festival will be moving from its traditional roots at the former ChameleonWest Studios space on Franklin to Hamburg as a part of the America's Fair.

It's the end of a difficult relationship the Allentown Village Society, and the beginning of a bright one with America's Fair, who have been "incredibly accommodating from the beginning," said Takac. "On the one side, it's a bummer to have to move the festival from my neighborhood. At the same time, it's a great opportunity to combine our efforts to support Western New York." Danny Lang, CEO of the America's Fair, was also on hand for the announcement

The 5th Annual Music is Art Festival will take place on August 11, from 9 AM to closing, with 40 bands taking the stage. Included will be Amungu…

Jackdaw CD Release Party Tonight!

Hmm... let me see. It's Friday night, I want to have a guaranteed great time at bar that's going to be packed with cool, down-to-earth people, laughing, and hear some great new Buffalo music, and buy merch that's cooler than anything out of a corporatized "indie" band. I've got the answer to all your prayers (except the unending free bar tab): Jackdaw is having a CD release party tonight at Club W, where you can see all your options for the evening at the big circular bar.

The new album, Blackgrass ($15), is as ever not only one of the best designed products in town, but a great listen as well -- click the link to check out "Bye Bye Lust," and you'll see what I'm talking about. The band worked intensely with Chuck Madden at Sessions Studios on Amherst Street (next to the Sportsmen's Tavern), w…
