While getting youth involved in the arts is fairly common, The Albright-Knox has created an innovative program to get youth involved in the process of curating art shows. Future Curators is a weekly after school program for high school students in grades 11 and 12 to learn about the day-to-day work of a museum curator, by organizing an exhibition of artwork by young local artists. Under the guidance of the Gallery’s Education department, fourteen exemplary students work with various staff members and are involved in every aspect of planning the exhibition, from selecting artwork to producing the invitation and planning the opening reception. The program culminates in an exhibition opening May 11, entitled “Almost Famous”, as a part of the Gusto at the Gallery Series. This unique opportunity highlights the work of the next generation of artists, as envisioned by tomorrow’s curators. Related events that evening will include The First Days of Film: Student Film Festival organized by…

I played hookie from BR yesterday to go to Toronto with a lot of special Buffalonians in order to film an infomercial with Peter Fonda for Time-Life Music.

This, after a phone call on Sunday from a friend saying that they had cast the whole thing with Canadians, much to the dismay of the producer, who wanted American voices. Eh? Add the fact that this would put me one degree of separation from Jack Nicholson, and I was in!

The era Mr. Fonda is hawking is the 60's. How fun is that? But we were asked not to wear black or denim. What? The fabric of our lives to discuss the music of our lives is a no-no? After seeing Fonda in denim and a black leather jacket, I realized that it was a uniform that would have been repeated over and over if not for the ban.

Fonda was business-like at first, but when someone (was it Dwayne Hall from Sportsman's?) asked him during a break if th…

Well, Full Circle Studios is definitely succeeding in its goal of getting people talking with locally-themed humor pieces, based on yesterday's clip of "Buffalo v. NYC". In today's short, the Queen City compares notes with Charlotte, NC again starring John Kreuzer.

The initial clip, "Buffalo v. Cleveland", explains the series' goal of creating content for a local cable station that would get people talking and watching the network again. The "Buffalo vs." series was one of several themed shorts, some historical, some modern, which take aim at local culture.

The mission, as outlined in their website for the …

Hallwalls is bringing Buffalo another treat this month in the debut feature film by underground visionary Jim Finn. Interkosmos assumes a fictional reality in which East German Cosmonauts and their allies attempt to establish socialist colonies on the moons of Jupiter and Saturn during the ‘70s. With a wit as dry as paper, Finn spins his tale with an incredible attention to detail and an ability to mash faked retro propaganda into a visual fairy tale of East German concepts of space and infinity.

“I wanted the energy and idealism of the Marxist left to be a part of the film and to create a communist love story in the process, as well as a kind of funeral dirge for a 75-year-old experiment in social and economic engineering,” he says in his Director’s Statement.

The Rural Route Film Festival, not surprisingly, was created to highlight works that deal with rural people and places. The festival, which showcases rural themes in an urban environment, features award-winning narrative, documentary and experimental films, including films from England, Siberia, Canada, Portugal, India and Germany. If you can’t take a break from our asphalt jungle for a while, this is a terrific way to get the rhythm and vistas of many of the world’s most beautiful countrysides into your life.
