We recently organized the BR Buffalo Chef's Challenge: Chayote in which seven chefs “battled” one another in a cooking competition. Each restaurant was presented with a mystery ingredient and given 24 hours (give or take a few) to develop an original dish utilizing it. This challenge will be held on a quarterly basis, if you are a restaurant interested in participating in our next challenge, please contact me through email.

For more information regarding this challenge, please see the initial post detailing the event. Each chef is ranked in first, second or third place (which happens to be a tie) or in one of three positions in our honorable mention category. The winners are revealed from honorable mention on up, with the winner being announced on June 14th. Again, please refer to the initial post for more information. For links to the other entrie…

Current Showing At Amaryllis' Gallery

Photography exhibit by Harry R. Stainrook - "the husband of Judith Swann, the father of Jennifer and Eric, as well as a retired executive vice-president of M&T Bank and M&T Corporation."

"One of the amazing things you will see in my New York City work is the results of Mayor Giuliani's leadership that led to its transformation. I have recorded this in the sidewalks, paths, streets, and broad vistas, which are clean of trash and its buildings graffiti-less. What started as a commission to do a two year photo study of New York City's Central Park, has broadened into what has become today's exhibit. Since we live one block from Central Park, three blocks from the Hudson River and seven blocks from Columbus Circle, these photographs truly a…

Following The Fries!

Where are the best French fries served in Buffalo? Me, I would have to say that the late night fries at Amaryllis are about as good as they get. Not only are the fries great, the English mustard powder (correction) ketchup that they serve them with rocks my world. Amaryllis, typically known for dishes like foie gras, and sashimi tuna, has somehow mastered the perfectly crisped fries. The best part is that you can order them even after the main dinner menu is no longer available. Amaryllis is kinda like that retro (boomerang bar) lounge that never got cheesy.

Any place that brings out a selection of Scotch's on a narrow wood tray so that a customer can point to a selection of their choice is pretty cool. Either that or have Matt (the owner) pick out a fine…

Amaryllis Restaurant Springs to Life

Article by Amy Schlagter, originally published in the current Holiday issue of Buffalo Rising Magazine

In its many incarnations, the restaurant space in the lower level of the Westbrook Apartments has been everything from a tie-and-jacket fine dining favorite to a beer-and-burger sports bar. The beautiful new Amaryllis Restaurant is somewhere deliciously in between.

The new owners, Jen Stainrook and Matt Harrington are excited to share their love of food with Buffalo. Jen attended the California Culinary Academy and got her start in West Coast restaurants where the emphasis was on using fresh ingredients from local farmers. While working at Andreis French Restaurant, one of Las Vegasi finest, Jen learned how to use u…

The Kitchen @ Amaryllis

Now there are kitchens, then there is the kitchen at the new Amaryllis Restaurant. A couple of us stopped in to have a nightcap the other evening at this unique spot on North before we hit Coda (another unique spot) for dinner. After sampling a couple items from the menu and trying a few of their reds, we decided it was time to hit the road. On our way out, we peaked into the kitchen...

The past meets the future at Amaryllis.

On September 29, Amaryllis, a new restaurant run out of the downstairs of The Westbrook Apartments, officially opens to the public. But for tenants n and their friends n this potential new hotspot debuted two days earlier, when the bar opened for cocktails and free appetizers.

Westbrook tenants will already be familiar with the space, which has a Delaware Avenue address (675) but actually fronts on North Street. The buildingis owners throw an annual Christmas celebratio…
