La Marina Market & Grille

If you’re looking for fresh seafood, La Marina may not only be your safest bet, arguably, it may be your best one.

Rosalie and Charlie Morreale have been running La Marina for a decade, offering fresh fish and seafood to it’s customers from its location on Hertel Avenue.

But the Morreales have been in business on Hertel for a long time, and the neighborhood is as fond of them as they are of it. Rosalie started as the “fry girl” at Jerry’s Seafood in her teens. Later, she and her husband bought the place. Once children came, they closed their doors to spend more time with the family, but once the kids got to be a little older, they opened up La Marina, a restaurant and seafood market of sorts.

Every piece of fish or seafood served at La Marina is inspected by Rosealie, a stickler for quality and a very knowledgeable purveyor. And her vendors know it; you can’t sneak anything by Rosealie.

La Marina, located on Hertel, has been serving some of the freshest (and the best) seafood in the city of Buffalo for many years. Rosalie and Charlie Morreale know good fish. They accept only the best from their vendors, sending back anything that falls beneath their extremely high standards.

One of the most unique features of this business is that they not only operate as a lovely restaurant (with a killer fish fry, also available to go), but also as a market. On Thursdays and Fridays, loyal customers stop in to buy salmon, scallops and sundry other gifts from the sea. If you are looking for a beautiful piece of fish, or some above-par seafood for home preparation, this is the place to shop. Since they carry only the best their selection varies from week to week and it’s best to call ahead if you’re looking for something in particular.

As I kept chopping up the ingredients, I relived every corner of my old home-spacious but cozy, the walls painted in deep purple and Mexican pink, terracotta tile floors and huge windows that overlooked the Castle of Chapultepec (an impressive historical landmark). I was now in my kitchen, bright yellow walls with randomly encrusted midnight blue tiles and the monumental sub-zero freezer & fridge combo that were this close to creating design chaos. I remembered the feeling I used to get while looking out the kitchen window. What a n…
