PB&J a Different Way

A few weeks ago Laura Sargent, a Buffalo Rising contributor, told me of her latest obsession—the peanut butter and jelly cookie from Delish. Apparently she and her beau had recently brought home one of every kind from the Elmwood bakery, and Laura found herself falling madly in love with the baked good, reminiscent of school lunches.

I’ve had a number of Delish’s cookies, but was particularly intrigued by our resident picky eater’s enthusiasm. So, on a recent stop into the Co-op, I asked the husband to run across the street and buy one. Not the best choice I've made, sending the family sweet tooth into a bakery chockablock with fresh cookies. He caught up with me in the parking lot, a sack full of half a dozen cookies or more.

I expected my peanut butter and jelly cookie to be overly sweet and, quite honestly, wasn’t very excited about the prospect having never been a fan of the childhood favorite in its original form. But the texture was fantastic; crumbly and chewy at …

Magical Fairy Cakes

Fairy cakes. That is the name Deb, owner of Delish, has chosen for these voluptuous cupcakes. Each one boasts dense, moist cake topped with a lavish amount of rich buttercream frosting. A version with seasonal flair always resides alongside classic chocolate and vanilla interpretations. Easily large enough for two people, these trendy treats are only $5 each.

A note to potential buyers of all things buttercream: Though cakes topped with authentic buttercream icing (not the fake stuff from the supermarket) require refrigeration, they must be brought to room temperature before eating. A mouthful of cold buttercream frosting is never as good as one that has been warmed. Intense flavor (and satisfaction) will be lost to the impatient consumer!

Delish Ingredients for the Home Cook

We all know (and love) that Delish! offers sweets to die for and cooking classes on most weeknights. Lucky for us, they also stock a good selection of gourmet grocery items. On my recent visit I was shown a sundry of treats, things that I hadn't really taken stock of on my previous bakery-oriented visits. A few of the items are even produced by Delish!. For example, there are cute little tins containing a noteworthy blend of herbs and spices. Called "Butt Rub", this mixture is ideal for slow roasting and grilling. High quality olive oil and balsamic vinegar are also bottled by Delish! and are very affordable.

A wonderful selection of jams and spreads line the shelves. Perhaps one of the most tempting items is Clearbrook Farms fruit tart fillings. …
