Halvah @ Bagel Jay's

Halvah, also known as halwa, halva, or halava, is what I would call an “old world” candy. It dates back thousands of years to the Middle East. Semolina forms the base of this sweet treat in countries like India and Pakistan. Tahini, a popular sesame paste, is used in Eastern Europe. Sunflower halvah is the more popular main component in Central Asia.

This particular variety, made by a 99-year-old Brooklyn company called Joyva, is available at Bagel Jay’s on Delaware. It has a sesame base and comes in two flavors, one marble (chocolate and vanilla) and the other vanilla coated in chocolate. Both of these treats are kosher parve, and are therefore perfect for both vegans and those that follow specific dietary guidelines for religious reasons.

Every year around St. Pat’s they begin baking up the green ones. Though they call the flavor plain, they are really anything but. Today is the last time this year that you’ll be able to invoke giggles from your brood with a bagel of green, so swing by and pick up half a dozen. Bagel Jay’s has two locations to serve you. One is in Williamsville; the other is located a co…
