Spar's European Sausage & Meats
It seems that every chef in the city knows about Spar’s European Sausage on Amherst Street. Located in the Grant-Amherst neighborhood, its fortunate customers have an array of lunchmeat and sausages (both smoked and fresh) to choose from. It turns out that many of those customers are chefs from some of Buffalo’s most esteemed restaurants. As a testament to their products, Spar’s is not a wholesaler and doesn’t have the ability to make deliveries, which means that chefs interested in incorporating Spar’s premium meats into their menu have to make a special trip.
Just over a year ago, Joe and Beth Kennedy purchased the operation after Joe spent three years apprenticing under the original owner, Eric Spar. Throughout Kennedy’s training, Spar imparted to him his lifetime of experience, some of which took place during his childhood in Germany. After 18 years, Spar decided to sell the business and Kennedy was ready to step in and take over.
Guercio's is possibly my favorite place to buy groceries in the city. Though I often make stops for other items at Wegmans and Lexington Co-op, Guercio's is almost always my first choice. They are a great resource for produce, fresh bread, imported goods and items from the deli.
Have you ever found yourself utterly starving while shopping? I must not be the only one based on the selection of pre-made, ready-to-go foods available at the Co-op and all major supermarkets.
At Guercio's there is no "dining room", panini or lattes. What they do offer is killer deli sandwiches at a shockingly low price. Sandwiches can only be ordered during typical lunch hours on weekdays, but that doesn't deter many based on the number of folks waiting patiently in line.
We all love the traditional Superbowl chow. Chili, Bison dip, those little smoked sausage things, cheese, cheese, cheese and the standard subs, pizza and wings.
This Saturday, the Co-op is offering shoppers a taste of some alternative munchies. Samples of gourmet chips and beverages will be available to those that stop by between noon and 3 p.m. Another thing to keep in mind is the killer fresh sandwiches, salads and other goodies they make in-store. Many of them would be great additions to your Superbowl feast.
If the Co-op isn't a store that you frequent regularly, this event is a great opportunity to stop in and check it out. FYI- the Co-op is open to members and non-members alike.

It seems that no matter how often I shop at Guercio's I come away amazed by how little money I,Aeove spent for the giant box of food I leave with.
I think that fresh produce and the deli counter are the place where I notice the price difference the most. It is really remarkable how affordable it all is. Root vegetables are easily only half the price per pound as they are at the big stores right up the street on Grant and Amherst. Additionally, Boar's Head deli meats, perhaps the best brand available, are about the same price as the off-brand meats offered at corporate owned deli counters in the city.
A day or two ago, I decided to spend $20 at Guercio's. Not on anything in particular, and not in an attempt to buy as much as I possibly could for…
