Boston's Marissa Nadler writes songs exclusively about heartbreak. If you've never heard her sing, that statement might be enough to turn you off--I mean, how many cry-baby singer songwriters can we handle, right? However, if you can spare some time, and perhaps a few tears, Marissa's velveteen voice and sparse instrumentation will convince you otherwise.

Nadler's music is true American Gothic – heart-wrenching, sometimes horrific, stories delivered in a sleepy-eyed, yet almost chirpy manner. Her latest offering, Songs III, isn't a horribly depressing record per se. Sure, the songs deal with heartbreak, and often death, but there's beauty in all that decay. The depression isn't obvious all at once; instead, the feelings of sadness and pain spread from one song to the next like thick honey. John Bacon at Soundlab

Tonight!

John Bacon and Multi-Jazz Dimensions announce the release of the CD "Boxing Day", featuring duo and solo performances by John Bacon on drums and percussion and Paul Bley on piano. This CD, recorded the day after Christmas in Rochester, New York, captures these two musicians collaborating spontaneously in the studio on a series of eclectic improvisations. Bley is a seminal contributor to the history of Jazz music through his exploration of free jazz, interactive piano trio and early electric improvisational music. Bacon has explored a variety of musical frontiers including avant-jazz with Roswell Rudd, new music with the Maelstrom Percussion Ensemble and Latin Jazz with Wendell Rivera. A Co-production of Multi-Jazz Dimensions, Soundlab and Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center. www.johnbaconjr.com

My first encounter with Chae Hawk, a/k/a Noble Truth, was at an unspeakable hour of the morning outside a venerable alcohol delivery station in the Allentown district. While everyone else was relaxing and winding down, Chae Hawk and dj.dstar were quietly working the crowd with flyers, talking to everyone there about their upcoming show. I knew it to be the sign of a dedicated musician, who is not just in it for the glory or the girls, but really believes in the project and what they have to say. Noble Truth has been a fine example of this ethic, at an especially young age, which speaks to a long and fruitful career to come.

In fine, grand tradition, he's retiring his stage moniker, Noble Truth, and returning to Chae Hawk. The ceremony, "Death of a Noble Truth", will be held at Soundlab on Saturday night. Fittingly, he's reitiring the name at its peak, having just won an Artvoic…
