When Ming Cafe re-opened its doors several weeks ago, a great cry of relief sprang from the mouths of the many Buffalonians that have become fervent fans of this little restaurant's fresh, authentic Chinese food.
Every year, owners Sam and Helen gate the doors and windows of their University Heights restaurant while they spend the summer touring the world. This year they found themselves in Europe; Ming's walls are a tribute to the trip, hung with Sam's gorgeous photographs.
You can never be sure when they will return from their summers abroad, and in late September, we began to hear from readers anxious to know when they may return. It was late this year, in late October, but we're glad to have them back. The heartbreaking reminder of arriving to find them closed is enough to turn them into a weekly visit for those of us who know it will be all too soon before our bellies, spoiled for other Chinese food, will have to go without again.
If you haven't been to Ming, you really don't …
One of the best restaurants in the city is back in business. Each year, the owners of Ming Cafe, Helen and Sam, close up for the summer in order to travel. Each year they come back in the fall, but no one ever knows when until the gates are reopened. While driving down Main Street yesterday we noticed that the gates were no longer closed, so we pulled over to see if the restaurant was open. Much to our surprise, Helen and Sam had returned and the city's only gourmet Chinese restaurant was open. The University District is so lucky to have Ming in its midst. I was fortunate enough to cover their story when the magazine first started, and ever since I have been a devoted fan of this delicious eatery.
Many people tell me that they drive by and think that Ming is just a cafe. That couldn't be further for the truth. Of course Helen brews some fantastic teas, but the magic is in the f…
A few months ago, we at Buffalo Rising began to mull over the idea of having a round table meeting with area chefs and restaurateurs. Our goal was to provide the opportunity for chefs and restaurant owners to talk to others who walk paths similar to their own.
Better yet, what if it was a potluck? Most chefs love to cook for each other; it’s an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and ideas to their peers, made better by the sounds of said peers smacking their lips.
Sam and Helen of Ming Café generously offered their quaint and lovely restaurant for the evening, closing the doors to their loyal customer base (though we did have a few diehards sneaking in for some last minute takeout). Our guests arrived, plates, food and bottles in hand. It was only a few minutes before this group, largely comprised of strangers, fell into step with one another, talking about the current…

I Love Ming Cafe
I never thought that I would ever crave Chinese food. If it were not for Ming Cafe in the University District I don't know if I ever actually ever would. Last night we had one of the most incredible meals of all time: 1. Crispy beef with ginger garlic sauce and scallions tossed in rice wine and Peking …
Leave all pre-conceived notions of your corner Chinese take out restaurant behind and run to Ming Cafe on Main Steet across from the U.B. South Campus. Sit down and try my favorite dish... Crispy Honey Chicken with Cashews. It's what General Tso wishes it could be. Tender boneless white meat fried to perfection and coated in a honey soy sauce. Throw in some cashews, red peppers and almonds and you have an explosion of flavors and textures that you won't soon forget.
Each dish, like this one, is lovingly prepared to order by your gracious hosts Sam and Helen. They have the staples, and they are fantastic, but try something a little different. General Tso, who?
