Yard Sail @ Rock Harbor Village

Join us on August 16th at The Rally Rock Harbor Yard to scope out unique, one-of-a-kind items while listening to live music. As always, bicyclists are encouraged to ride to the venue. Blue Bikes will be present to provide bike valet services, free of charge. Admission will cost $5 on the 16th due to live performances from Kidstreet, The Mom and Dad Parade, and Sleeping Kings of Iona (among others). We are currently seeking vendors, organizers, promoters, volunteers - anyone with an idea that would help to spur this into an ongoing market. We look forward to hearing back from you and working with you in the near future. If you have had experience with other flea markets, or just want to help, please contact Amelia Schineller.
If you always wanted to wake up on a Saturday, grab a cup of coffee, listen to some live music and shop for sweet bargains, then this could be what you've been waiting for. It's outdoors and there will be food and beverages on hand to purchase. There will also be a life-size Scrabble game to play... it's all there!
In coming days there will be updates concerning the exact times of the Yard Sail - it all depends on how many responses we get over the next couple of days. The Yard is located (see here) at 57 Tonawanda Street just off the bike trail. It's very close to where Forest Avenue runs into Niagara Street. Scajaquada Creek is right there too. Come support an earth-friendly venue filled with artists, food, and finds. Mark your calendar!

ValoreBooks has changed its name to Bucks4Books, and with that change, it continues to bring new and innovative ways to make it easier, less time consuming and more profitable for college students to sell back their text books. The Buffalo based company was founded in 2002 by a group of Western New York college students looking for a better alternative to on-campus bookstores.
Staying true to their slogan “A Refreshing Text Book Experience,” Bucks4Books made it their mission …
Earlier today we took our first walk through the brand new Burchfield-Penney Art Center. By the end of the visit I must say that I was a bit disappointed. Why? Because after walking through the entire complex, I found myself wishing that I had gone to the membership gala the night before. That was when thousands of members/supporters came together to revel in the glory that is The Burchfield-Penney Art Center.
The art center experience certainly lives up to all the hype that has …
This past July, the East Delavan Branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library was given a grant of more than $133,000 from the Josephine Goodyear Foundation to help improve literacy rates in the area as part of the Read to Succeed Buffalo Literacy Coalition campaign.
Organized by Good Schools for All, a program of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the goal of the grant and its resultant programs is to achieve a 100 percent literacy rate in the City of Buffalo …
Almost nothing incites a turf war on Buffalo Rising like The City vs. The Burbs talk (unless, of course, the topic happens to be Classic Art vs. Modern, or Casino vs. No Casino, or anything to do with the Peace Bridge and trolls).
Therefore, we enjoyed this little parody from the Onion that pokes fun at the 'burbs, but at the same time takes a look at what might be a haughty attitude held by city dwellers in respect to the suburbs.
This piece pushes stereotype to the max in a to …

*Of course one of biggest obstacles is going to be convincing people that Black Rock is not too far*
For real? Too far from where? Who do you have to convince of that? Do the readers of this site not go north of Amherst St & south of Allen? Holy crap. Y'all are missing out on a lot of goings on in Buffalo if you think Black Rock is "too far". I am really confused by this...

Agreed, but really it's not many readers of this site who spend almost all of their lives in the suburbs circumventing the actual city.

While I like the concept, as hard as it sounds to believe, the five dollars will cut into the crowd. I've been a part of other projects where any admission, especially where people are 'looking for a bargain', will limit the crowd. To organizers and such, it doesn't seem like much, but I'd bet you'll have half the people vs. if it were free.
It's too bad there's not a backer to pick up the fee for the bands while this project get's off it's feet. If you could work out something where the bands could benefit long term if the market prospers...that would be the best for all involved.

ben, we tried the free thing.. yes we had 100+ people but no one stuck around and they came and went as they pleased. 5 bucks is easy, cheap and the bands that are playing oin the 16th are amazing. Kidstreet from Toronto are making it there and is starting to make it here, MARK WEBB was just added to the line up, he is incredible and we also have a rapper named tee nyce that will be doing some stuff. it should be awesome. I hope you come out to support!

Bernice, I hope it works. For those that might consider vending, how much is a table? Is a table supplied with a spot? Maybe you have this information online, sorry if I've missed the link. Can a vendor get electricity?

If "Black Rock" is too scary, just think of the location as a 3 minute bike ride down the path from the serene Japanese Garden at Delaware Park... (or, from the Tops Market bike path on Grant & Amherst)

I am excited about this project and am going to try to participate by renting a table for flea market items- but I agree with benfranklin. Charging $5.00 to get in will kill any hopes of getting the flea market part off the ground because flea market people absolutely DO NOT want to pay to go shopping (and I don't blame them). No matter how good the music is - they are not attending for the music. To get the flea market part going it has to be free or it won't work.

fredrico - there is a huge flea market in Hollywood on the corner of Melrose and Fairfax every Sunday. Entry fee was $5 when I last went 4 years ago... There was no beer, no band, and no parking. The place was packed.
Yeah, I know, this is BFLO - but Rock Harbor will be packed with people for the music venue at $5 a head. The flea is a v.cool value-added benefit to the admission price.

you said it yourself--- Buffalo is a far cry from Hollywood, especially in a forlorn industrial area of the city
