Yancey’s Fancy is an award-winning cheese maker based in the Finger Lakes region. Their legacy begins with the settlement of founder Leo Kutter of Bavaria, Germany in the Cowelsville, NY area in 1926. There he worked as a maker of Limburger until the war began. After the war he moved to Corfu where he began his own company, manufacturing Swiss, brick and cheddar in addition to Limburger. Since then, the business had been handed down and has undergone many changes. Today, Yancey’s Fancy offers an extensive line of cheeses and cheese curds. Fortunately for us, a number of are available at the Lexington Co-op.

Yancey’s cheeses are extremely reasonable at only $5.99 per lb. I took home a nice wedge of aged cheddar made with “Finger Lakes Champagne”. It was bright and flavorful, the perfect addition to a piece of homemade apple pie. yancey%27s%202.jpg The Co-op carries at least six versions of Yancey’s Fancy cheddar. Varieties include roasted garlic, habanero and jalapeño pepper, horseradish, Buffalo wing seasoning and flecks of peppadew.

I'm quite fond of Yancy's xxxsharp cheddar which I've been buying at Wegman's. It's good to know that the line is carried at the Co-op which is way closer to my house than Wegman's.

I was so excited to find this cheese at a Stew Leonard's in Danbury, CT that I immediately had to buy it, as I do with other hometown products. The label is designed well too!

Great food comes from this little aisle at the Co-op. Yancy's cheeses, along with the others like the Wenslydale and manchego, fit any appetizers appetite. I've had the Buffalo Wing Cheese before and it's excellent, as mentioned in an accompanying article "slash" recipe.

Stop here on your way home from work for something different. You will certainly find it every time.
