Prime Time @ Xtreme Wheels on Hertel

By applying for a 501C3 Virginia hopes that Xtreme Wheels can become a skate center for underprivileged youth during the summer months when kids are most likely to get into trouble. "Nobody else is offering an opportunity like this," she told me. "As I get more and more involved, I understand that the parents of the underprivileged kids are making major sacrifices to give their kids the opportunity to skate with the others. I spoke in front of a couple hundred kids at Lancaster William Street School yesterday and it was so incredible to hear their enthusiasm. JP from Sunday Skate spoke as well and all the kids wished him a happy third anniversary for his skate shop. This is our fifth year that we've been in business so it's time to give needy kids the equipment that they need and the dedicated personnel that's required to run the program... it's called Prime Time. I've had a lot of people who have contributed to the effort to defray the cost of establishing the non-profit, as the cost can run from $5,000 and $8,000. It's a time consuming and expensive endeavor, but we feel that it's important to provide skateboarding experiences for kids who can't afford it."
Xtreme Wheels' mission statement is: Unifying individuals, improving fitness, developing self confidence, educating with skateboard instruction, providing equipment and scholarship opportunities to qualified individuals in a non discriminatory environment. If you feel that this effort is something that you can identify with, then check out the XW Foundation at www.xtreme-wheels.com for more information.

ValoreBooks has changed its name to Bucks4Books, and with that change, it continues to bring new and innovative ways to make it easier, less time consuming and more profitable for college students to sell back their text books. The Buffalo based company was founded in 2002 by a group of Western New York college students looking for a better alternative to on-campus bookstores.
Staying true to their slogan “A Refreshing Text Book Experience,” Bucks4Books made it their mission …
Earlier today we took our first walk through the brand new Burchfield-Penney Art Center. By the end of the visit I must say that I was a bit disappointed. Why? Because after walking through the entire complex, I found myself wishing that I had gone to the membership gala the night before. That was when thousands of members/supporters came together to revel in the glory that is The Burchfield-Penney Art Center.
The art center experience certainly lives up to all the hype that has …
This past July, the East Delavan Branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library was given a grant of more than $133,000 from the Josephine Goodyear Foundation to help improve literacy rates in the area as part of the Read to Succeed Buffalo Literacy Coalition campaign.
Organized by Good Schools for All, a program of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the goal of the grant and its resultant programs is to achieve a 100 percent literacy rate in the City of Buffalo …
Almost nothing incites a turf war on Buffalo Rising like The City vs. The Burbs talk (unless, of course, the topic happens to be Classic Art vs. Modern, or Casino vs. No Casino, or anything to do with the Peace Bridge and trolls).
Therefore, we enjoyed this little parody from the Onion that pokes fun at the 'burbs, but at the same time takes a look at what might be a haughty attitude held by city dwellers in respect to the suburbs.
This piece pushes stereotype to the max in a to …

Y'know, this situation is similar to the one that screws up the bicycling bunch. There's a conflict between the interests of the vehicular crew and the toy crew.
This article opens with skateboards zooming up and down sidewalks and then moves to the skate center concept. Which is it? Are skateboards for travel or for recreation? Could they be for both? Yes, they could.
Let's not figure that establishing a "skate park" on Hertel Ave in any way helps meet the needs of the people I see using their boards along Hertel Ave to get from Point A to Point B.
I'm not a skateboarder. I believe (but I may be mistaken) that I'd do myself serious damage if I tried. But from what I've observed, there are a LOT of people who use skateboards for transportation. I support them. They're a hell of a lot more welcome on the streets than SUVs, for example.
My impression is that unlike bikes (my chosen form of minimal impact transportation), skateboards have little established history or legality. They deserve it. A skate park isn't sufficient.

When my son and I moved into the Buffalo community almost 2 years ago we found that there weren't many safe places that I could take him to skateboard. After searching the web I discovered the Xtreme Wheels website (www.xtreme-wheels.com) I liked wat I saw online so we checked it out. Much to my surprise, I found the actual owner, Virginia, working at the service desk, a very enthusiastic woman. She was Xtremely ( No Pun intended) knowledgable and a comforting woman whom i knew I could trust leaving my son in her care. We are frequent patrons of the Grom Club, which is the only skate boarding club for children under the age of thirteen in all of Western New York. My son also participated in the Summer Camp program, which to my awe Virginia homecooks the kids meals everyday. He is now going to be participating in his very first competition, which she has deisigned for the younger children at no extra charge. I urge every other parent to give the skate park its due attention, because as a single mom, I find it quite sufficient.

That's great! Hoping that the application process is going smoothly. State formation is relatively easy but receiving tax exempt status from the IRS can be time consuming. Good luck!
