P22 type foundry, Inc. (along with WNY Book Arts) is on the move in more ways than one. In 2008, founder and creative director, Rich Kegler, tells me that the company will be (hopefully) securing a building in downtown Buffalo for its operations. "We're absolutely looking at downtown Buffalo. From the beginning we've looked downtown. We're talking about some heavy machinery, so this is going to be a permanent home ... and we're also looking at buying the building we're moving into. We've got some potential buildings in mind. The workshop series will eventually take place at the building... and that means that all of the dates that we run will also have a permanent home. We're looking at about 2000-4000 square feet for our own use, and that's not to say that we aren't talking to another entity about joining us in a bigger building."

In the meantime, it's business as usual for P22. That means that the company has announced an exciting workshop schedule, with the first one kicking off this Saturday. "Buffalo has a long history of printing and book arts," Rich expressed. "The recent revival of the Roycroft campus is one example of recapturing that legacy and now the Western New York Book Arts Collaborative is increasing awareness of the art and craft of printing and the book. A new series of hands-on workshops throughout the winter will give a sampling of the types of workshops to be offered for practicing artists or fledgling students. While a search for a permanent home for the WNY Book Art Collaborative is underway, workshops and events continue to be held at various locations around Western New York."

Following is the WNY Book Art Collaborative schedule:

January 12 - Intro to hand set type & letterpress printing --Instructor: Hal Leader - Paradise Press - Hal Leader has kept his Paradise Press open as a working museum for year with countless tours for design classes and interested parties. Here is a rare opportunity to take a workshop with Hal and learn how to hand-set and print your own typographic layouts on the vandercook proofing press.

January 19 - Intro to Fontlab - Making digital fonts --Instructor: Richard Kegler - P22 type foundry - Over the past 13 years, P22 type foundry has been making and marketing fonts from its Buffalo offices. This workshop will cover the basics of how to make your own fonts using the same tools and techniques that P22 uses. Trade secrets will be revealed!

January 26 - Gocco Printing & Japanese binding --Instructors: Diane Bond & Linda Meyer - Taught by Roycroft artisans, this 2-part workshop will begin with the legendary Gocco printer: students will make their own prints and learn the subtleties of this “toy” screen printer from Japan. The second part of the workshop will use Japanese binding techniques to make a collaborative book of the Gocco prints.

February 2 - Budgeting for Independent publishing --Instructor: David McNamara - Sunnyoutside press - McNamara has recently relocated his sunnyoutside press from Boston to Buffalo. His experience in the independent publishing world offers a practical perspective to self publishing from handmade to commercially printed books.

February 23 - Foil Embossing workshop --Instructor: Don Dehoff - Keepsake Bindery - Work with master binder Don Dehoff on one of the most noticeable details of any book project. Foil stamping on a book cover immediately draws attention to itself but there are a few tricks to get it right.

March 1 - Zine Publishing & Distribution --Instructors: Amy Greenan & Joel Brenden - Two of the area’s prominent zinesters will show many examples of the genre including historical background and discuss their work as well as ideas for unexplored territory. The class will produce its own zine by the end of the day from materials brought in by each participant.

March 8 - Silk Screening Printing on Wood --Instructor: Jeff Sherven - UB Print dept. - The technique of screen printing offers the unique ability to print on just about anything. This workshop with artist Jeff Sherven will guide participants through printing their original artwork on the cover of a wooden box and edition it on paper to share with fellow participants.
