What Would You Name The Beach?

At one point Mayor Brown stopped by with his wife Michelle to check on the activity. It was pretty funny to hear half the beach shout out 'hello' to The Mayor. I spoke to Peter Cutler, Director of Communications, for a while about the possibility of extending the beach next summer. I also asked him if the beach name 'Erie Basin Marina Beach' was definite. He told me that he was pretty sure that no formal name had been chosen and asked if Buffalo Rising readership had any suggestions.
Tomorrow is supposed to be around 70 and mostly sunny (UV index of 8). The winds will be 5-10 miles per hour... and the evening is supposed to be warm as well. So grab your kids, a towel, and a plastic shovel and think of a good name for the beach. My pick? I like Emerald Beach because the Emerald Channel is nearby which leads to the Buffalo Intake Crib. The Intake Crib is the water intake structure out in the lake that looks like an acorn... it's also referred to as the roundhouse. There are also massive numbers of Emerald Shiners in Lake Erie (see post).

According to Joy McDuffie, Foreclosure Prevention Specialist at the WNY Law Center, don’t believe everything you hear about foreclosures in Buffalo – they’re still a real problem. McDuffie says many think that Buffalo didn’t get hit hard by the sub prime lending market collapse, but that it just isn’t true.
“We’re really trying to help because Buffalo definitely has a foreclosure problem, but there are things that homeowners can do. We actually have a $700,000 two-y …
Medaille was founded in 1875 by the Sisters of Saint Joseph to prepare its members for teaching in diocesan schools. Later, in 1937 the institute was chartered by New York State to grant baccalaureate degrees in education; the college was renamed in honor of Father John Peter Medaille, and the rest is history.
Since its founding, Medaille has grown into a well-known, private, four-year college with their main campus located in the historic Olmsted Crescent in the heart of Buffa …
Since 1994, people have gone on the self-guided “Secrets of Allentown” tour, discovering the rich history of the area and the beauty of the architecture here in Buffalo. That tour once again returns, and though they’re willing to tell you the main attraction, to find out the rest of the homes, you’ll have to take the tour yourself.
The tour is on Sunday, September 14th and kicks off at the Clement Mansion where the Red Cross is headquartered at 786 Delaware Avenue. There, …
Maybe you read about this one last December, or maybe you took the time and looked over this one in April, and perhaps you considered attending this event back in June. Whatever your reasoning for putting it off, there’s no time like the present for Forgotten Buffalo, unless of course it’s the past.
Forgotten Buffalo Tours take participants on a journey into the history of the area, always striving to produce a unique and entertaining outing. Their success has allowed them to …

What's wrong with "Erie Basin Beach"? It would make it just that much easier to find.

Glad to see all the excitement over beaches, sad it took Buffalo so long to realize this. Now lets get that beach going by the Coast Guard Light house. The water is cleaner, calmer and out of the shipping lane. We probably could swim there.

My list of potential beach names:
- Bureaucracy beach
- Brown's bluff
- Seriously! There's a beach here.
- Amherst doesn't have one of these!

I have been planning on asking Brian Davis to bring up a resolution to name it Newell Beach. Jstraubinger is right. Without Newell's suggestion to Brian Davis, that beach would not exist today. I noticed that in today's News, the story said that it all started when "someone" suggested to Brian Davis that the beach should become utilized.
I suggest that as many of us as possible contact city council members as well as Mayor Brown and explain why Newell Beach would be the most appropriate name.

I'm fine with the "Erie Basin Beach". Would be easier to tell people where it is.

You could call it "horrible tragic death beach" and acknowledge the fact that eventually, most likely sooner than later, someone is going to ignore the no swimming sign and drown...

Thank you Newell for a great initiative! Emerald Beach sounds great,
Let's aim for the next project, remember, a wise man always keep himself in the back ground as the politicians congratulate themselves for implementing ideas and energy coming from the people/constituents, we all know who that "someone "is

Without question it must be named Darling Daughter Beach. This assertion is based on the traditional bit of doggerel below.
Mother may I go out to swim, Yes my darling daughter, Hang your clothes on a hickory limb, But don't go near the water.

Tons of people down there today building sand castles. We should have a sand castle contest later in the summer. Erie basin also needs to have canoe or paddle boat rentals , so people can get out on to the water if they don't own a boat.

Laird3rd - I think that paddle boat or canoe rentals is an awesome idea! I don't know why something like this couldn't happen? It's nice to see people thinking outside the box!

Years ago there was a beach not far from this one called Times Beach. I don't know what the origin is, but I can remember a lot of good times there. It's funny, but there was no life guard on duty there either, but back then we all swam anyway. Mother's sat under umbrellas, kids made sand castles and dad's washed their cars. It was at the foot of Michigan avenue. Times Beach II is my vote.

I'm not so sure that Times Beach II would be a good name. Times Beach is also the name of the now-demolished town in Missouri that was an even larger toxic disaster than Love Canal.

PCBeach (j/k) couldn't help myself..
I think City Beach is nice because it reflects the fact that it is is downtown. Buffalo Beach would be an obvious options also but then what happens if Times Beach or the Bell Slip Beach ever get attention. Maybe being in downtown also anchors it as Buffalo Beach better than others might. Whatever the name is it should help locate the beach in people's mind. It should be obvious and reflective of place. Leave our names or politicians or famous people that no one really knows... They only confuse people.

I checked out the beach yesterday. It's very cool and the whole area is starting to take shape and become a hangout for all ages. To me it will always be "Deadly Current Beach." Those signs are crazy overkill, but it would be hard to say that you were not warned. The waves must have been 2 or 3 inches high, therefore, "Pacific Beach" would also be a fitting name.
