What Do Nicole Kidman, A Lighthouse and The Casino Have in Common?

The most interesting stories in today's Buffalo News address those three topics, of course.
In case you missed it, there were reports on local television stations and in the Buffalo News that Nicole Kidman had spoken out in support of Studio Arena Theater. It seemed like an odd cause for the Australian actress to adopt and for good reason - she didn't adopt it. The story was a fake though the source and reason for the fraud is unclear.
Second, Judge Skretny has refused to order the Buffalo casino to shutdown and instead handed the issue to the National Indian Gaming Commission. From where we sit, we can see the construction on the new casino continuing as it has been for months. Piledrivers are banging, cranes are swinging, and the Seneca Nation flag is flying.
Finally, you may have the chance to buy yourself or a loved one a lighthouse in South Buffalo. The 105 year old structure will be put up for auction, according to the Buffalo News, and could go for as little as $5,000.

Now that the Elmwood Village has landed the distinction of being one of the Top 10 Great Places in America, I can't wait for the day when the city switches up the street's lamp standards. If you look at historic Allentown, you will see that the street lighting is attractive and effective. It places the importance of the neighborhood experience on the sidewalk, rather than on the cars. As we see the highway cobras being replaced (finally) in our neighborhoods, our commercial distri …
Tomorrow evening, Ron Rienas, General Manager of the Public Bridge Authority, will meet with former State Senator Al Coppola in order to discuss the Peace Bridge and plaza expansion once again, and word is that Hillary Clinton is sending representatives.
In addition to the aesthetics, health concerns and historical impact to the immediate area, final funding has not been previously disclosed and is obviously an important element in the ongoing controversy over the entire proposed …
You know that you've run across a creative garden cooperative when you're shopping for gardening supplies and you come home with a work of art. That's why we're so lucky to have Urban Roots on the city's West Side. During the course of the year, the cooperative works hard towards teaming up with artists who live in the community. It is during the Holiday Season that there is a big push to shine a light on the creative individuals. And don't think that art just comes in the form of …
The Bills have a home but away from home game this weekend against the hated Dolphins. Suneel's Light, a local medical research foundation, is throwing the largest tailgate party in Western New York as the Buffalo Bills try to revenge their early season loss to their divisional rivals, the Miami Dolphins this Sunday in Toronto.
Known as Tailgate for a Cure, the annual fundraiser organized by the Suneel's Light Foundation welcomes all to attend a full blown, festive tailgate part …

Regarding the Nicole Kidman/Studio Arena story, I'm going on a bit of a tangent here to ask how come all the major media outlets in Buffalo were fooled? Last night's Channel 2 News broadcast talked about how they couldn't trace the origins of the story, and how several phone numbers on the bottom of one website turned out to be bogus. It seems like the time for fact-checking would have been before reporting the story as fact, not after.

to answer thewhynotguy didnt you here? thats how local reporting is now done. they put the caveat "is being reported by such and such website" to relieve themelves of any responsibilty or work for that matter. then the blame the web site . that way the get one free story and if it turns out wrong they turn that into another story all without doing a bit of work. who the hell would want to be a journalist these days? with few exceptions its a shell of the profession it once was. goes doulble on the local level.

between the buffalo news being tricked by the nicole kidman story and the buffalo police being tricked by that text messages on gang activity, it seems there is a problem here of asking questions first before making embarrassing retractions. would an extra hour or two of research really ruin things. compared to how it makes you look in the long run? Just reading the original nicole kidman article didn't make sense. Why doesn't the quote appear with specific reference to Buffalo, but ones to Chicago or Houston? what is her connection to Buffalo? how would she even know about the theater? That comment about Kelsey grammar didn't seem to be enough.
hilarious! let's hope it doesn't make it's way to TMZ.

Because we are all starfuc%$#s and no one locally would put another thin dime into Studio so they had to come up with some ploy to suck in the suckers! Miss Nicole Support Studio - might make a nice play for the Road Less Traveled guys...

Our local media seems intent on maintaining our collective inferioirty complex. It's safe to say that the majority of $50,000 gifts which occur annually with most of our culturals by local indiviudals and businesses never merit a mention. But if a website in England says a STAR in Austrialia is GOING TO write a check it's page one over the fold. The story sounded fishy from the start - Studio Arena may be our local theatrical tragedy, but it is not the only struggling theater in the state, the nation and certainly not the world. For that reason people in the public eye don't generally make public proclamations in support of one over all others unless they have a strong personal tie. Even at that it's usually a private donation to prevent a flood of similar requests. The challenge to specifically named celebrities is fine for one softball team challenging the others in their league on a local telethon, but doesn't work that way in the real world. I could see televsion playing up the celebrity side in a slow weekend news cycle with a skeleton crew - but when I saw the News bannered the non-story on the front page the next morning I actually choked on my tea. Dr. Jandoli back at Bonaventure j-school would have done much worse.

Like most people who don't follow the NFL, Kidman has probablly never even heard of Buffalo, NY.

And if Nicole Kidman hasn't "heard" of Buffalo, that's supposed to mean what?

It means that she won't be sending Studio Arena a dime, and like most things in Buffalo it will shut down. Par for the course in America's 2nd most dying city.
Never fear, I am sure you and the rest of the losers on this website will find bike paths, old buildings, and small shops (that will go out of business) to get excited about. Problem is you won't find more jobs.

If someone is dying, that means that they will eventually die. Buffalo isn't going to die. Any claim that it's "dying" -- or dying faster than somewhere else -- is meaningless.

Kudos to the mastermind behind this hoax. The Buffalo News and all the local broadcast media should be ashamed. How do you not at least double-check Nicole Kidman unexpectedly shouting out support for a local theater in Buffalo, NY?? C'mon!!!!

This just in... Jim Carrey is going to buy Buffalo! He is making an offer on the HSBC Center and all of the vacant buildings on Main Street as a start. Total cost is an estimated $5.2 Million. When asked to comment, Mr. Carrey was quoted as saying "Buffalo has been great to me, from Buffalo Bill to Ace Ventura to Bruce Almighty, this place has been a gold mine!" Carrey continued, "I grew up across the border and have always been a big fan of the underdog, Buffalo gave me major material when I was doing stand-up in Toronto. I would put a orange hunting vest over a camouflage snowsuit, pull my face tight like I was freezing and say, 'Buffalo's Talkin' Proud', it would send the people rolling in the aisles. I am also a huge fan of the Bills, whenever a reporter wants to corner me about not winning the American Comedy Award after three nominations I simply tell them, 'Hey, I'm Jim Carrey, not Jim Kelly! I still have one more chance to go, right?!"
Carrey will be in town to review his new real estate portfolio, we were going to ask local residents to refrain from their usual weekend travels to Main Street, but found this to be unnecessary.

Why is Buffalo Rising reporting/repeating what the Buffalo News reports? I already have the link to their website, I can read that garbage there.

Oh Buffalo...so so so desperate! I never took a jouirnalism class, but I imagine they teach source/fact checking in Journalism 101. Only in a place so desperate for good news would all three local TV stations and the only "major" newspaper immediatly jump on such a ridiculous story and lead off the news casts with it and put it on the front page of the paper. What a joke! Shocking that the local politicians didn't have a press conference...

Media outlets all over the country run poorly sourced news items all the time. The frequent claims that something "only happens" here -- from bad reporting to people wearing tapered jeans -- are bogus, unless the commenter has a god-like ability to know what's happening everywhere else at all times.

So...Colin...you have no problem with all print and tv outlets running with this story? You don't think they should be held accountable?

No, I think it was a mistake to run the story. I don't see anything in my comment that would suggest otherwise. My point is that the claim that such a story would run only someplace like Buffalo is bogus. It happens all the time.

Colin is like many of these people on this forum, delusional. Buffalo is not a dying city, poor, losing population, etc. These are just parts of the government and media conspiracy to bring down Buffalo.

You're right, this problem isn't specific to Buffalo at all. But there's no reason we can't take the lead in holding our media accountable.

I don't dispute that Buffalo is poor, or continues to lose population. I never said that I did. Nice strawman, though.
My point is simply that, since Buffalo isn't going to die, it's inaccurate to say that it is dying. It's a false framework from which to tell the story of Buffalo and other post-industrial cities, and it's used to sell magazines at our expense, and at the expense of the truth.

sadly to say, but Buffalo is still feeling the pain of being kicked in the nuts with the whole Bethlehem Steel shut down....losing that may good paying, minimal education required jobs is almost impossible to replace....as is quite evident......the trick is having the vision to look past on building your trade on what worked in the first half of the 20th century ....
