Wellington Pub- A Neighborhood Classic

I usually order a fish fry when I go, so I wanted to try something different this time. I ordered the Pittsburgh Salad, described on the menu as “our neighbor’s original salad.” The salad contains chicken or steak, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and French fries. I tried the chicken version. Outstanding! In order to “keep it Pennsylvania” I asked for a Yuengling. When the bill came I was shocked to see that the Yuengling cost two dollars. Two dollars for a bottle of beer in 2008? Oh Buffalo, how do I love thee, let me count the ways!
It’s the little things that contribute to a great dining experience. In this case it was the delicious Irish soda bread that was part of a generous bread basket. I was stuffed, having devoured my salad, the soda bread, and a sample of my wife’s fish dinner. The fish was excellent, and so was the potato salad that came with it.
Here’s a tip: if it’s Friday, and you don’t like waiting for a table, get to Wellington early. We arrived at 5:00 and barely beat the dinner rush. The two spacious dining rooms were filled by 5:30. Meanwhile, the barroom was packed, which has been the case whenever I have visited on a Friday.
Spring is almost here, and it means two things to me: Better weather and baseball. On one of my past trips to The Wellington Pub I noticed that a New York Yankees game was televised in the barroom. Since that time I have wanted to sit at the bar and catch a few innings of a game. When the regular season begins in April, I plan on popping into Wellington Pub during the early afternoon to enjoy a beer, a beef on weck, and some baseball. What a perfect way to beat the dinner rush!

Before returning to Buffalo, I often wondered what new additions I had missed in our city’s restaurant and bar scene. So highly recommended by many of my closest friends, Jimmy’s on Elmwood, the old Buffalo Barbeque and Brew, was on the top of my to-do bar bite restaurant list.
It has recently been taken over by Jimmy Hambridge, who has been involved with the establishment since it’s opening as the Brew in October of 2006, actually a day before that horrible storm. The Ji …
It should come as no surprise to YUM readers, that I have a passion for spices. You can expect to find me foraging through the city’s ethnic markets, hunting for treasures with which to restock my spice cabinet. The more exotic the spices, the more excited I am to try them. And excited is exactly the way I felt when I first discovered zatar.
Not to be confused with Za’atar (which is a sort of hybrid of thyme-marjoram-oregano), zatar is a traditional Middle Eastern aromatic …
If you’re craving something sweet, you’ve picked the right time to do it. Starting on Monday, June 23rd, Choco-Logo Confectionery Design will be kicking off its annual summer sale. Choco-Logo, whose name is modeled after “Coca Cola,” was, up until recently, the only chocolate factory shop in downtown Buffalo that had captured the attention of people from all over Western New York.
Specializing in corporate gifts, custom logo chocolates and private label products, Choco- …
Italian restaurants are much loved here in Western New York. People from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds cherish the hearty, homestyle flavors of this Mediterranean cuisine. However, for the large group of immigrant and first-generation Italians here in Buffalo, several of the local Italian restaurants miss the mark.
With a mother from Calabria (southern Italy) and some training in the culinary arts, I fall into this category of disenchanted Italians yearning for tru …

Another great place where you can get a great beer, Flying Bisons Aviator Red, for a mere $2.50 a pint is The Nortel. Went there based on Queenseye's article a few weeks ago and wasn't dissapointed. Only $2.50 for a pint of FB. Not bad at all.
