WBFO and BRO: Walk of Fame, Art (and Weather), Labatt Labels (again) and Carl Paladino

Another week, another set of topics during our weekly visit at WBFO with Mark Scott. This week's Buffalo Rising Roundtable in Studio B had us discussing the Cultural Walk of Fame. In spite of the fact that most of the comments centered around people not liking the look of the sign, it is a well-intentioned initiative spearheaded by Charles Griffasi Sr., holding much deserved kudos and attention directed toward the people it honors.
If those who don't like the sign want to cough up, I'll bet Griffasi, who did this with his own coin, would welcome the opportunity to sink some money into a sign that would please almost everyone.
Next we talked about the April 2008 issue of AmericanStyle Magazine that proclaimed Buffalo as “No. 1 Arts Destination for Mid-Sized Cities” in AS's annual “Top 25 Arts Destinations” poll. Seems the mayor of Scottsdale, Arizona guffawed when he heard Buffalo won the designation. Sore loser? Okay, maybe we talked a little after-smack that we're not proud of, but we are proud of our citizens, both the artists and those who voted for them.
Mark wondered if we got our press release, complete with six-pack of the new Labatt labels with Buffalo on them. Yes, Mark, we did. It's the sort of news that goes down real smooth-like. And it was our second installment. Love those Labatt folks.
Lastly, we discussed Carl Paladino and his latest acquisitions on Niagara and Busti. Admire him or not, Carl has a formula, some bucks to back him up and a keen business acumen. Buy 'em, fix 'em, build 'em. When Carl gets involved, he gets things moving. There are naysayers, but we like to see saves and new builds, and he does both. As evidenced by this Buffalo Rising Video from last May, there are those buildings that Carl recognizes as being beyond repair too.
Mark makes the very salient point that Paladino follows trend in his speculations. And Paladino is aware that where he goes, others will follow. That's okay by us.

Now that the Elmwood Village has landed the distinction of being one of the Top 10 Great Places in America, I can't wait for the day when the city switches up the street's lamp standards. If you look at historic Allentown, you will see that the street lighting is attractive and effective. It places the importance of the neighborhood experience on the sidewalk, rather than on the cars. As we see the highway cobras being replaced (finally) in our neighborhoods, our commercial distri …
Tomorrow evening, Ron Rienas, General Manager of the Public Bridge Authority, will meet with former State Senator Al Coppola in order to discuss the Peace Bridge and plaza expansion once again, and word is that Hillary Clinton is sending representatives.
In addition to the aesthetics, health concerns and historical impact to the immediate area, final funding has not been previously disclosed and is obviously an important element in the ongoing controversy over the entire proposed …
You know that you've run across a creative garden cooperative when you're shopping for gardening supplies and you come home with a work of art. That's why we're so lucky to have Urban Roots on the city's West Side. During the course of the year, the cooperative works hard towards teaming up with artists who live in the community. It is during the Holiday Season that there is a big push to shine a light on the creative individuals. And don't think that art just comes in the form of …
The Bills have a home but away from home game this weekend against the hated Dolphins. Suneel's Light, a local medical research foundation, is throwing the largest tailgate party in Western New York as the Buffalo Bills try to revenge their early season loss to their divisional rivals, the Miami Dolphins this Sunday in Toronto.
Known as Tailgate for a Cure, the annual fundraiser organized by the Suneel's Light Foundation welcomes all to attend a full blown, festive tailgate part …

Difficult, indeed, to follow such eloquence, but I do want to comment that I believe the name is spelled Griffasi.

I don't understand why Palladino is given such a free ride? This is the same guy who owned the Webb Building for years coming in front of the preservation board every six months to TEAR IT DOWN for surface parking. The same guy who SITS on the BARC... has a portfolio of parking lots...more parking form him to govern to line his own pockets...The same guy who says there is a CRISIS downtown because of the lack of parking! Wants the Main Place to relinquish its controll of part of their Business TO THE BARC!!!!! GOD wake the f up BRO...he is shady and is only using BRO to promote HIS interests. These touchy fealy projects, and politcal manuvouring are only to distact from his empire of BAD BUSINESS, counter to what our city needs to emulate.
