Vintage Cookbook Sidewalk Sale

I love cookbooks. I am not an ardent collector, but I do have quite a few. Some of my favorite cookbooks are vintage ones. I think that I probably use my 1967 Joy of Cooking more than anything else. My mother received it as a gift at her wedding shower- it served her well, and I’ve come to rely on it also.
Vintage cookbooks can be looked at as classics, providing the 1, 2, and 3’s of preparation; or as fodder for a good laugh. Classic canapés and cake recipes often co-exist beside the slightly more dated (and scary) ones. Heavenly Ham Loaf with Pickle Stuffing anyone? If that doesn’t appeal to you maybe a good Upside Down Spam Pie or some Banana Chicken Salad are more your speed.
Saturday, April 21st and Sunday, the 22nd, Elmwood (between Hodge and West Utica) will offer passers-by a peek into the culinary past with a sidewalk sale of vintage cookbooks. What an opportunity! The weather is supposed to be lovely, so take a break from your yard work and go for a stroll down the avenue. While you're in the neighborhood browsing the cookbooks, you can have lunch at Off the Wall and an afternoon ice cream at the Lexington General Store. Seems like an excellent way to soak up some sun to me.
See you there!

It's great to see stylish, hip, new restaurants pop up downtown such as Sea Bar on Ellicott Street, which specializes in contemporary Japanese food. A clean ultra-modern space, Sea Bar’s dining room is quaint and inviting. The sleek sushi bar has counter seating and the wet bar, with beer, sake, and wine, has at least 10 sakes to choose from on any given night. We were happy to try a Sojitio, a sake mojito, which had the right amount of mint without too much sweetness.

Ten years ago, the downtown of My Fair City was forever altered when a Big Dinosaur appeared on the scene. Thankfully—unlike 1950’s Tokyo—when this dino showed up our downtown wasn’t flattened, but considerably improved. Dinosaur Bar B Que, a restaurant that originated in downtown Syracuse in the 1980’s, planted its foot in downtown Rochester in 1998. It was an instant hit—it’s common to have a line waiting to get in at all times. And it’s clearly Hog Heaven— …
Cecelia’s Ristorante & Martini Bar is prepared to guide their guests through the tastes of fall with their brand new fall menu. Although it is getting a bit too cold for the patio, the hardy food inside will warm things right up.
I started out with the Harvest Salad ($8) and the “Lumpy” Crab Cakes ($9). The Harvest Salad was served with a rosemary citrus vinaigrette, and topped with apricots, beets, pine nuts, walnuts, dried cranberries, and other assorted dried fruits. …
One of the perks my daughter's friends enjoy about a sleepover at my home (other than rearranging the furniture for movie time) are the crepes I serve our guests in the morning.
I can remember sleepover breakfasts from when I was a kid that consisted of potato chips and soda from the night before. If the lack of sleep didn't make us dizzy and irritable enough, the fat, salt and sugar we ingested in the morning would make sure the entire day would be counted for lost. Ugh.

This has made my month! One question: cash only, or will plastic be accepted?

i'm not sure, but there doesn't seem to be a storefront involved. that would lead me to believe that it won't be plastic friendly. glad you're excited!

I went... calling it vintage is pretty debatable, but it was a decent sale. Picked up the early 60s Southern Living collection. Most stuff seemed to be mid-1970s or later, though. Kind of a disappointment since I collect cookbooks from the 40s and 50s and I think there were four or so from that time frame there (which I bought all of...).
Good prices, though, and I think it was a Junior League fund raiser, so a good cause, too. (well, I think, because they were selling that cookbook new, and several other Junior League books from elsewhere new)
