Update: Tabu Withdraws Adult License Application

Tabu at 777 Main Street will not be applying for an adult use license after all. The bar, which bills itself as a “gay ultra lounge” had been expected to be before the City’s Zoning Board of Appeals today to obtain a license to operate an ‘exotic cabaret’ less than 1000 feet from a church. The bar is in the commercial space of the Sidway apartments at Main and Goodell, catty-corner to St. Louis Roman Catholic Church.

The bar which is planning to feature weekend drag shows, only needs a dance license, not the adult use license necessary for a strip club according to information in the Buffalo News.

As long as drag show participants remain clothed, the shows can go on under a dance license, standard for local clubs and bars.

Tabu opened on March 8.

Were you ever from Buffalo? Just wondering because I was suprised by the word catty-corner. Being in Maryland I hear that all the time and it drives me nuts. I was pretty sure we Western New Yorkers all say kitty-corner. On the topic note, sounds like a good idea to not apply for the license. Sidway can be used for much better purposes.

Still not understanding why a church should be able to dictate what uses happen in this space.

Wasn't there an X Rated Movie theatre across the street (now a vacant lot-closer to the church) years ago? Did the church shut that down too?

I thought it was an odd mix of uses, residential and nightclub, when they first opened but felt that was an issue for the people who lived there. It would have been nice to see something there that was open during the day that could promote pedestrian traffic and interaction with the street instead of blacked out windows and groups of smokers. Wishful thinking however, and willingness to invest is hardly a valid argument.

The tenants in the sidway must be thrilled to pay premium dollar for their lofts.

I spoke with several tenants that are moving out.

Catholic church opposite gay lounge. This is a contradiction? "As long as drag show participants remain clothed." I love it.

The Church only approves strip clubs, and more precisely, gay strip clubs, that are opened 50 miles outside of town. And only if the parking lots are screened from passing traffic and the anonymity of certain patrons dressed in heavy knit black clothing is respected. Otherwise, such immoral activity can never once be tolerated or endorsed.

"As long as drag show participants remain clothed"

I don't think there's a drag queen out there that wants to be naked on stage! Kinda ruins the effect.... :)

Steel's right. The church should no more be able to prohibit neighboring tenants in other people's buildings than any of us could prohibit their church. St. Louis might be just as offensive to some of these bar patrons as vice versa. Live and let live.

@sleep8, don't worry about it, a few people seem to think by nailing you repeatedly with a single star no matter what your comment is going to make a difference, just laugh at them...or pity them.
