Urban Roots, which hosts a number of workshops each month, will be lucky enough to host two workshops headed by a widely respected gardener and master birdhouse builder. The first workshop on April 5th runs from 11am to 12:30pm and is presented by Karen Sirgey.

Sirgey is from Avian Architecture, which creates unique birdhouses and butterfly houses. The workshop will center on how to plan a bird and/or butterfly garden as well as setting up a birdhouse. The workshop comes at a special time because now is the season of bird migration. Also, the birdhouses from Avian Architecture are available for sale at Urban Roots.

Then, on April 10th from 5:30-7pm, Urban Roots has a workshop featuring Eleizabeth Licata, a master gardener of GardenRant.com, editor of Buffalo Spree, and her blog, Gardening While Intoxicated. Licata, who was recently featured in the Washington Post for her contribution to GardenRant.com, will present on summer bulbs and tubers such as lilium, dahlias, colacasias, and canna. Licata will cover how to plant them, maintain them, and overwinter those that need it.

To sign up for either of these great workshop, you can call 362-8982 or you can e-mail workshops@urbanroots.org. At their last workshop they had over 40 people attend, so the sooner you sign up, the sooner your spot is assured. However, if you can’t make it, feel free to check out their event calendar or stop at the store at 428 Rhode Island Street.

We are building a fence around our new lots tomorrow (Saturday) if anyone wants to help us. Think of it as a fence building workshop.

The whole Rhode Island side will now have a beautiful new cedar dog-ear board-on-board fence. We'd love to see you come give us a hand even if it's only for an hour or two.

We spent the day today digging all the holes and putting the posts in so the fence should go up pretty fast on Saturday. We are building the whole thing ourselves one board at a time so it should be a lot of fun and a good learning experience for anyone interested in how to build a high-end fence from scratch.

We are also open for business so feel free to stop by and spend a lot of money.

Within the next few months you should see the new totem fence designed by Brad Wales and his students going in on the 18th street side. We'll post more information on this soon.

I hope everyone has a nice weekend,

    Harvey

What Harvey's trying to say is we're building a fence tomorrow! If you come, bring boots. It's pretty muddy.

How about a workshop on how to grow some food staples in the backyard? As food prices (tied directly to all the fossil fuels required to ship them thousands of miles) skyrocket, it will become imperative for people to learn how to grow their own food. Pretty flowers won't stave off hunger.

    Good idea.
