UNHINGED: Sign up For Artists & Models Affair 2008

This year, Artists and Models will take place Saturday, May 31st 9pm-2am, at the NY Central Terminal. Last year's event was such as a success that organizers are looking to one-up it at the same inspirational location. Unhinged is being defined as: 'a location, a state of being, a condition, an apparition, a temporary psychosis, and an inevitability.' All of these descriptions will be incorporated into the upcoming show. At this stage in the game, the search is on for artists who want to participate in making A&M the most unusual... the most far out... the most interesting one in 20 years. Have you had this crazy idea for an interactive instillation, but you weren't sure how to get it off the ground? Artist and Models might be the perfect venue for you. Think big. Think bold. Think about submitting a proposal for this year's show. Details
*Hallwalls is currently accepting proposals from artists for temporary, one-night installations and performances to be a featured element of Unhinged. Only a limited number of installations will be included so preference will be given to the dynamic, the compelling, the arresting, the creatively deranged, and the thematically apt. Keep in mind that, because this is an event-oriented exhibition, more subtle works better suited for a gallery or installations that require controlled environments for audio are less effective. Participating artists will have a minimum of 5 days to create their installation. Participating artists will receive a modest honorarium.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, March 14, 2008
Submission Tips:
* LARGE-SCALE is good for the Central Terminal
* PERFORMANCE is good
* VIDEO PROJECTION is good
* ROAMING performance is good
* AUDIENCE-PARTICIPATORY works are good
Your Unhinged proposal should include:
* Your name, address, phone, email
* A detailed description of your proposal (250 words), with accompanying images/sketches, if possible. (This is NOT an artist statement. It's a description of not only what you envision but also how you plan to realize your project.)
* An indication of your minimum space requirements
* A list of your technical/equipment needs (if any) and your available resources.
Email proposals to EACH of the following:
1. John Massier - Visual Arts Curator
2. Carolyn Tennant - Media Arts Director
3. Polly Little - Development Director

Few private citizens can claim awareness of the growing pet population like Robin Johnson can. Johnson owns and operates Vilardo Printing at 326 Connecticut Street and since she took over the business in 2001, she has started rescuing stray and abandoned cats. For Johnson, it started out as one cat, but then it became two, then four, and well, as Johnson puts it, “you know how it goes. There were always cats around the city and when you take in one cat, you always have a gazilli …
Work started on returning two-way traffic to Main Street's 700 block on Monday. Yesterday, Avalon Development made a strategic purchase on the same block where it has been working since 2001. The development company headed by Chris Jacobs acquired 715 Main Street at the northeast corner of Tupper. The highly-visible building contains 6,110 sq.ft. of space with coveted rear parking along Washington Street. Plans for the building are not known.
If you're into science and you're looking to support the Museum of Science, then you don't want to miss this awesome event. Actually, the Museum of Science has been hosting a series of unique gatherings in recent years, but it is the Museum's Attic that actually gets you into places that not many people will ever get the chance to see. The museum's collection is so vast, that at any given time there is a fraction of items showing to the public. Even when exhibits rotate, that only …
Now we're talking... this Sunday (2pm-5pm), 250 incoming Medaille freshman are going to be heading down to the Commercial Slip. It's a joint effort between Medaille College and the Buffalo Tours program. Hopefully this trip will be just one of the many waterfront excursions that these students take during their time spent at the college. Not only will the students learn about the waterfront and the surrounding architecture, they will also be shown where they can catch the Metro Ra …

I hope those people that do that super cool installation that's an unemployment agency for super villains are there again; that was a blast.

And please, no Dadaists. Dada has failed at this location numerous times over the past few decades.

I love Artists & Models. The Central Terminal was a great place for the event.

I have been wondering why Buffalo Rising has been surprisingly silent on Studio Arena's financial troubles. We are at the brink of losing a great theater venue and shuttering a prime space on Main Street, and yet we hear nothing from the Arts people at BRO. Just wondering why that is.

plenty of Buffalo's inconvenient truths are ignored on Buffalo Rising

Last year's A&M was a visual/aural experience you can only get in a soaring space like the Central Terminal. For those who are unfamiliar with the concourse design, the 58 1/2 foot ceilings are covered in Guastavino clay tiles to absorb the clatter from passing trains. The result is acoustic sound levels that are nearly as good as Kleinhan's.
