Two Blades At A Crossroad

Two Blades At A Crossroad

Story Options

While biking down North Street yesterday I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this 'wide load' heading my way. At first I thought it was some sort of water tower. Then I thought it might be an art instillation... or an airplane. Finally I realized that it was one of the windmills heading off to Steel Winds along the waterfront. So if they were heading to Steel Winds, what on earth were they doing heading North on Delaware and then taking a right onto North Street. I mean, this corner is not exactly made for extra wide turning maneuvers.

What was really incredible was discovering that the windmill was actually just two of the blades, not the tower. It was amazing - to see these blades so close was a spectacle. Traffic was at a standstill as the driver and crew stepped out of the vehicle to analyze the situation. The blades sat there for a good twenty minutes (at least) before I finally left the scene. Gawkers stood along Delaware asking what the cargo was... honestly, at close proximity it was tough to tell. BRO contributor, Al Labruna, told me that there were at least four shipments so far. His photo, taken from a high, of the last shipment (to date) follows.

You could set up a few of these wind turbines in the Walgreen's parking lot.

Anyone have an update as to how many windmills will be installed in this phase and how many are planned in total? Excited to see them go up!

I saw the convoy on Main Street in Snyder yesterday, an amazing site. I flew to NYC a few week ago and all of Wyoming County and Central New York are full of windmills.

OK - harnessing wind power is great. I'm all for natural energy. And windmills are exciting - I guess. But my question is this - if it's not reducing MY energy cost, but putting money in the pocket of a middle man, then what's the point? Shouldn't there be something in it for US? Do we really want to be looking at 500 of these things 10 years from with no no financial impact on our bills. I mean, we already have Niagara Falls in our backyard, and pay some of the highest electrical rates in the country!?!?!

They have been moving these all summer up and down abbott road to the southern tier and Wyoming County. My guess is they were avoiding construction on Rt. 5.

During the summer, friends of our were caught in the traffic holdup when two windmill blades were being transported through a rural area in WNY They also didn't think they were looking at only two of the blades and not the entire windmill. They tried to describe the length of this shipment..........

It would seem logical that harnessing wind power SHOULD lower our electric rates. However, you have to remember that electricity, oil & gas are commodities, traded on a market, with prices set by speculators that look at current supply & future probable supply and demand pressures. Electricity has more of a true current price, for sure, but essentially what the windmills do is lessen the rate of increase in our future electric costs by feeding lower-cost energy into the grid. As we add more generating capacity with windmills, we minimize the need for other generating sources that are more expensive, or higher risk (nuclear, coal), and we do less damage to the environment (excl birds and small planes... both which I am sympathetic to). ultimately whatever we ca do to feed a gerater percentage of power into our grind from renewable vs. non-renewable sources, the better the environment will be, and the more "energy independent" we'll be.

well if we had a municipal power company with generation abilities (ie, windmills, water wheel, solar. . .), it would be very possible to lower utility costs locally.

Wingking- Whats in it for us?? how about just a cleaner environnment, an unlimited amount of renewable energy, more jobs for WNY and the U.S. in general.......and most importantly taking some kind of dent out of our dependancy on foreign oil and keep the money out of those scumbag muslims overseas that are laughing at our asses.

Bringing down my utility bill is the last thing on my mind considering the bigger picture.

Parts are shipped quite frequently to and from the former Republic Steel site on South Park Avenue....it is an ingenious method they have rigged up to move them

yeah the lower amounts of mercury, co2, no2 and other nasties that coal plants spew is exactly what all of us are getting. I also could care less about my electric bill. A little conservation can go a long way.

It should be art work. Why not erect it straight up and put two bolders at the base to support it :).

I like magnum's idea......and maybe add a fountain at the top.

Then it wouldn't be art, silly. But it would be a bigger tourist attraction. Paris has the Eifel Tower, Buffalo will have....(now what could we call it)?

what do we get out of it? how about we are leading the way and a Euro company decides to build a manufactoring plant here for all the wind mills America will want. we just need some one to recruit them

Magnum = shades of Billy Lawless. hehehe

I passed these things going the other way on Delaware that day. Driver must have been a victim of Mapquest.
