Turkey Trot: 10,000 People Strong

Story Options

When I first hear that the Turkey Trot attracted over 10,000 runners, I was simply amazed. Seeing the front page photo in the Buffalo News today confirmed that the race was a visual delight for both runners and spectators. Yeah, I know that this is a popular race for Buffalonians, but it's more than that. This race attracts what some might say is a cult following. It's a race that draws families and friends together. People rally behind the race and rally behind Buffalo at the same time. It's like a big reunion... a reunion with people and a reunion with the city. From BRO's Thomas Tarapacki:

"The Turkey Trot is more than a race - it’s a massive Thanksgiving celebration, bringing together thousands of family, friends, and co-workers for an enjoyable workout prior to Thanksgiving dinner. Whether you’re a runner or a spectator, it’s an unforgettable way to spend Thanksgiving morning."

OK... 10,000 people prescribed to Tom's comprehensive post description - a recipe that does a great job giving all of the details of the race. I've never actually run in the race, though I have witnessed it and participated in the race-related parties... Next year I might just have to partake in the healthy aspect of the event, rather than just the gluttonous activities. No matter what your reasons are for loving the Turkey Trot, no one can deny how much this race does for the moral of this city. Thanks to photographer Rimas Musteikis for taking some behind-the-scene photos that you see here. I love the costumes... it just goes to show how much spirit revolves around this holiday race. From Rimas:

The bottom photo is of the Cheektovegas Running Family of America. They are Jenn, Janene, Mary, Nikki, Rachel, and April (the 6th member had departed already). The Jive Turkey runners signal the coming of The World's Largest Disco, which takes place in Buffalo tomorrow night! As far as race dress code goes... the dress spectrum is quite large.
