Tourists In Our Own Backyard

Seeing that yesterday was so beautiful, we decided to head off to the Inner Harbor to find out what was open... and what was not. Actually, a friend of mine had told me that he had seen some public activity there - people milling about out past the Whipple Truss Bridge. Indeed the newly added area around the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Serviceman's Park was free to walk around, and we were surprised to find out that the museum doors were also open. Unfortunately we have still heard no plans for any sort of an eatery or café on the premise - there is a dire need inside the museum for just such an amenity. Being able to walk through the first floor of the museum (for free) and out along the water was fun though. Everyone we ran across looked like tourists... maybe because we were all tourists in our own backyard.
One of the more notable changes to the Inner Harbor, other than the area being open to the public, was the Commercial Slip signage that was just added to the side of the green bridge. Plus we could clearly see that the boardwalk was coming along nicely on the other side of the canal terminus (not open yet). The end of the terminus is currently filled with garbage debris and driftwood... not exactly a pleasant sight, but I'm sure that there are other things to worry about at this point in time. An unexpected hit was the sail of a dismantled submarine that had been added towards the entrance. It was funny to see people of all ages gravitate towards the military 'monument'.
The lack of a café got us to thinking about other things that would be nice to have down there... temporarily until more permanent amenities can be established. The warm weather is here, and that means that James and his Ice Creamcycle should be patrolling the scene. I would think that Timmy would want to deliver one of his hotdog carts to the park. And how hard would it be to get a Spot Coffee kiosk down there selling coffee and breakfast sandwiches? Even if the business is not booming yet because it's early spring, get some stuff out there on the weekends at least. There were enough people walking around the site to make it worth some entrepreneur's while. The message will spread a lot quicker if there are some basics available to purchase.
Side Note: While we were visiting the Inner Harbor we ran into MJ Worthington, a regular commentor on BRO who was busy setting up a photo shoot for Spinwurkz. The shoot incorporated a couple of scantily clad girls and a tricked out TT-Busa motorcycle – hence the first photo in the post.

Now that the Elmwood Village has landed the distinction of being one of the Top 10 Great Places in America, I can't wait for the day when the city switches up the street's lamp standards. If you look at historic Allentown, you will see that the street lighting is attractive and effective. It places the importance of the neighborhood experience on the sidewalk, rather than on the cars. As we see the highway cobras being replaced (finally) in our neighborhoods, our commercial distri …
Tomorrow evening, Ron Rienas, General Manager of the Public Bridge Authority, will meet with former State Senator Al Coppola in order to discuss the Peace Bridge and plaza expansion once again, and word is that Hillary Clinton is sending representatives.
In addition to the aesthetics, health concerns and historical impact to the immediate area, final funding has not been previously disclosed and is obviously an important element in the ongoing controversy over the entire proposed …
You know that you've run across a creative garden cooperative when you're shopping for gardening supplies and you come home with a work of art. That's why we're so lucky to have Urban Roots on the city's West Side. During the course of the year, the cooperative works hard towards teaming up with artists who live in the community. It is during the Holiday Season that there is a big push to shine a light on the creative individuals. And don't think that art just comes in the form of …
The Bills have a home but away from home game this weekend against the hated Dolphins. Suneel's Light, a local medical research foundation, is throwing the largest tailgate party in Western New York as the Buffalo Bills try to revenge their early season loss to their divisional rivals, the Miami Dolphins this Sunday in Toronto.
Known as Tailgate for a Cure, the annual fundraiser organized by the Suneel's Light Foundation welcomes all to attend a full blown, festive tailgate part …

I'm sure if we had more women like the above at Buffalo cultural attractions, we'd be all set in the tourist department!

I visited the Naval Park visitors center last week Wednesday. I talked to the manager there for about 30 mins and found out a lot about the facility.

I used to go this section every other morning during the week with my breakfast, eat, enjoy the scenery and then head off to work on Main Street. It usally had a good crowd even then (before 9am) with older people that may be local, but who knew...Anyways, seems this section is always busy and that's a good thing. A cafe' would be great over there.

A couple of notes/questions?
1. Is there going to be a grand opening? Most people don't even know about this site and for those like me, who have been following it closely, I STILL didn't even know the museum was open.
2. Queenseyes - The garbage by the bridge will NOT collect their during the summer months. Obviously, the water was frozen up unitl a few weeks ago. Under the bridge is a manmade waterfall. It was operational last summer (near the end), it basically runs constantly and sucks water from the river, but since the slip is only one-way, the water all flows out of the slip. Logs and other natural environmental debris if landing in the water will just get slowly pushed out into the river. It works very well. and the watefall looks cool. Look for it soon.
3. Does anyone know when the bridge will open?

This may be a dumb question, but I've only lived here a year and a half -- how exactly does one get to this place? Is it off the skyway? And where do you park? Thanks.

Hi btal -- Don't get on the skyway... it's actually along side of the skyway on the city-side of the harbor. Right across the street from the old Memorial Auditorium, and right next to the Naval/Veterans Park. It's not easy to describe the location so go to a mapsite like maps.google.com and type in the address "One Naval Park Cove, 14202" Hope that helps.
