Do yourself a favor and get over to the recently renovated Birge Mansion on Symphony Circle. That's where the tour starts... and it's also the first 'home' on the list. This is your chance to step inside the houses that make Allentown one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city. The last time I had the opportunity to see the inside of the Birge it was already starting to show signs of wear and tear. Then it sank into complete decrepitude. Now The Mansion on The Circle is back and is open for viewing today.

There are already lines forming outside these Allentown homes. Stop by and enjoy yhese homes... and then it's onto the Microbrew Festival at the Central Terminal. So, treat yourself to a wine tasting at the Hamlin House (Secrets), then head on over to view the 15 unbelievable homes that are awaiting your arrival. An added bonus is the eight trolley stops along the way. The Birge Mansion is located at Symphony Circle across from Kleinhans Music Hall... if you're hungry after the tour there are many local restaurants in Allentown including The Coda situated behind the music hall. By the way, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra's Opening Night Gala is tonight!

Anyone looking to restore a former mansion of their own should continue up Porter Ave, to #428 at the corner of Plymouth (on the right) o it's for sale at a ridulously low price but, I'd imagine, needs a good bit of work. To see that an investment done correctly would be worth your while, continue another few blocks on Porter and check out the houses on both sides of the street as you approach D'Youville College. Check out the link (above) too, to see one of them "before" and "after". Enjoy the tour!

can anyone explain what the allentown association actually does besides perpetuate itself and provide its president with the prime corner space at the allen west festival? over the last two years, and since the coit house debacle they mainly seem to be maintaing their own existence. they do little or nothing about problem properties in the neighbor hood. a very important piece of city legislation regarding the regulating of social service agencies, of which there is an overabundance in allentown, is about to expire in the common council and they are doing nothing to notify, educate or mobilize the community. give your money to a better cause, and if you are a member, ask the association what it is doing for YOUR neighbor hood? also ask what is happening with coit house....they may have sold it, but it was with the assurance that it would go to someone who would protect and preserve it, not flip it a year later for a profit.
