The Unsung Heroes

Yup, I'm talking about the lav, the john, the restroom, the powder room, the loo, the washroom, commode, privy, latrine, the water closet, the little girls' room, la toilette, the head, also known as the bathroom. Every sit-down restaurant has one... some nicer than others, and BRO wants to know which one gets your vote for the nicest.
Now, normally I dig the modern loos. The ones with the modern lighting, the sleek and snazzy with touchless faucets and dark slate floors. This morning the topic of clean and well-kept bathrooms was brought up, and it turned out that everyone at the table had their fave pit stop. We just happened to be at a neighborhood restaurant at the time, and someone at the table mentioned that the lady's lav at this particular eatery was especially nice. We snapped a photo before we left... can you tell which restaurant the washroom featured above belongs to? This one is in the running for the best powder room in the city. Do you have your favorite?

It was a beautiful day for Sunday brunch, so the only choice was a restaurant that still had an open patio, where the food was going to be great.
Betty's it was. Not only was I able to have my Jack Russell terrier tableside next to the short, flower box laden fence, but I got to sit in the sun. The angle was steep for noon, a telling sign of shorter days, and if you don't believe me, look at the shadow the home fries cast.
Betty's is one of those places where you'll run into pe …
There have been many reincarnations at 752 Elmwood Avenue over the past couple of years. Wasabi is the newest restaurant nestled next door to Fowlers Chocolates and right across the street from Spot Coffee. When you enter you are greeted with exposed brick, sleek furniture and a gleaming sushi bar where colorful sashimi sits like little gems in a glass case. It is a small restaurant that can seat 12 at the tables and about 10 at the bar. Sitting at the sushi bar is a treat and ent …
The day Edritos opened on Elmwood Avenue several years ago, I was a happy man. I powered down more than my fair share of burritos back in those days. When it moved downtown into the Key Center, I no longer frequented the establishment. I just wasn’t downtown often enough to stop in. But Edritos has moved again, this time to Hertel Avenue between Parkside and Wallace.
My wife and I dropped by for takeout earlier today. I am pleased to report that my burrito was as delicious as …
Marcos Vargas has had a slew of restaurant locations around the West Side of Buffalo in his 24 years of doing business here, but the latest move to Niagara Street has got to be the best yet.
Vargas hails from Puerto Rico. Before Buffalo, he had restaurants in New Jersey and on 57th Street in Brooklyn. This is a family business, and customer loyalty is built in, which is one of the reasons Vargas manages to keep his prices so low. You can get your salty/sweet and crunchy craving …

Coles is the best. It may be cozy but it reminds me of home (minus the graffiti and large hole in the wall.

Essex st pub has an interesting john. Graffiti covers almost every square inch of that place (including the seat). I heard it was removed, though, I haven't been in a while...

I'm a huge fan of the peestops at LaTeeDa's, decorated with vibrant, hand-painted walls by artist Peter Fowler.

My home town of Seattle had an alt paper that featured a "Best loo in the city" portion of its "Best of Seattle" issue. It was always my favorite part- those "Best Of' issues can become pretty mundane after a few years.

Mens room at the North Park Theater on Hertel. Art Deco, totally original, feels like an old gangster film. I always expect Al Capone or Humphrey Bogart to pull up to the stall next to me while I'm....well you know.

My favorite Buffalo bathroom was the little pink ladies room at Roseland. I also miss the black glass top bar and the dirty martini's. I miss you Roseland.
