The Salt Pig
In olden times, salt was an essential preservative in all households. It was also an important seasoning and was kept in a variety of containers, the earliest being small wooden tubs.
When, at the end of the eighteenth century, earthenware came to be used, the shape of the container used to store salt was particularly distinctive. It was known as the "salt pig"; a glazed, cylindrical, shouldered jar rising to a small knob for carrying, with a large hooded opening resembling the snout of a pig.
The jars were stored in niches by the cooking range so the salt was always near to hand. Now that's handy. As the saying goes, 'A little pinch'll do ya.'
The Salt Pig (sm. $28.50/lg. $38.50) can be found in a variety of colors at Spoiled Rotten, located at 831 Elmwood Avenue.

This project is both a success and a failure. Both productive and counterproductive. I like it and I hate it. And most comment posters are right regardless of their take... reason being there are lots of sides to this story. It completely depends on so many factors, some of which have no definitive proof. Therefore we must rely on speculation, judgment, experience and opinion for much of the basis of the argument for or against.

Sunday was the first time that I ever saw a real live pet blessing ceremony. I had heard of the occasion before, but never really had the opportunity to check one out. This was also the first year that Reverend Drew Ludwig (Lafayette Church) ever hosted a pet blessing ceremony. And the ceremony went so well that attendees are already talking about how to make next year's blessing bigger and better. Drew didn't even know if animals were going to show up since this was such a last m …

Great item!
Fill that Salt Pig with the very best salt in the world- Celtic Sea Salt from the coast of Britanny. This salt has all its minerals in tack and isn't at all like the table salt or sodium chloride we've been fed here in the US ( which BTW is bleached and stripped of its minerals, having sugar added to it so it'll pour better...isn't that a testiment to why we have phobias about using salt in this country)
Celtic sea salt will bring out the natural flavors of any food and is a joy to cook with. Plus we need salt to live! Research it more on grain and salt's website. http://www.celticseasalt.com/
PS- You used to only be able to buy Celtic Gray Sea Salt through the "Grain and Salt Society" via mailorder. But rumor has it you'll be able to get it at the Lexington Co-op soon.

That salt pig is so cute I just might have to buy one!
Salt tip o' the day: salt and hot water are all that are needed to clean an iron skillet. Once a skillet is well-seasoned and oiled, you should avoid washing it with soap to maintain its cooking integrity.
Salt trivia: Did you know that the word "Salary" comes from salt? The Latin word "salarium" means "salt allowance" and Roman soldiers were supposedly given an allowance to buy salt as part of their income.

I have a collection of "salt mamas" that I got on a trip to Armenia. They are not unlike the salt pig featured in this story, except that they are in the shape of a person, with a big hole in the belly.
