The Place Spruces Up

The Place reopened last night. Finally the wait is over for fans of The Place who never though that they would see the day... or night. I peaked my head in a short bit ago to see what changes had been made. For the most part, the ambiance has not really changed... unless you were a diehard fan. The curtains have all been taken down and the awning no longer offers protection from sunlight. And if that wasn't enough to brighten up the joint, a 50'' flat-screen TV now hangs at the end of the bar.
Some of the new features look pretty inviting, including the rebuilt plush-wrapped bar. The green wrap-around cushion matches the cushions on the barstools. Wall to wall gray carpeting adds to the fresh interior appearance as does the fresh paintjob on the walls. The Place now boasts a shiny stainless steel kitchen to go with the exact same menu that patrons have come to love over the years.
The Place is open from 11:30am to 11:30 pm Monday thru Saturday and Sundays from 4pm-10pm.
The Place: 229 Lexington Avenue

Now that the Elmwood Village has landed the distinction of being one of the Top 10 Great Places in America, I can't wait for the day when the city switches up the street's lamp standards. If you look at historic Allentown, you will see that the street lighting is attractive and effective. It places the importance of the neighborhood experience on the sidewalk, rather than on the cars. As we see the highway cobras being replaced (finally) in our neighborhoods, our commercial distri …
Tomorrow evening, Ron Rienas, General Manager of the Public Bridge Authority, will meet with former State Senator Al Coppola in order to discuss the Peace Bridge and plaza expansion once again, and word is that Hillary Clinton is sending representatives.
In addition to the aesthetics, health concerns and historical impact to the immediate area, final funding has not been previously disclosed and is obviously an important element in the ongoing controversy over the entire proposed …
You know that you've run across a creative garden cooperative when you're shopping for gardening supplies and you come home with a work of art. That's why we're so lucky to have Urban Roots on the city's West Side. During the course of the year, the cooperative works hard towards teaming up with artists who live in the community. It is during the Holiday Season that there is a big push to shine a light on the creative individuals. And don't think that art just comes in the form of …
The Bills have a home but away from home game this weekend against the hated Dolphins. Suneel's Light, a local medical research foundation, is throwing the largest tailgate party in Western New York as the Buffalo Bills try to revenge their early season loss to their divisional rivals, the Miami Dolphins this Sunday in Toronto.
Known as Tailgate for a Cure, the annual fundraiser organized by the Suneel's Light Foundation welcomes all to attend a full blown, festive tailgate part …

I went last night. Good, home, style and tasty. The spinach Gorgonzola soup was rich and sharp (which I liked).

Is that aqua or aquamarine naugahide? Is that real veneer or Sears' veneer?

The Place was always tacky looking, it still is. But it is The Place and nostalgia triumphs. Welcome back.

Ah, we once again have the joy of eating sandwiches and beer enhanced by the lingering smell of 400 years of unfiltered cigarettes. Nothing like an (unfiltered) Kool pastrami on rye.

Get over yourselves...it's a corner bar for goodness sakes!

Unbelievable...the critics have resorted to ripping the interior of a neighborhood restaurant. If the restaurant is clean, has above average service and the food is good quality, who the heck cares about the color of the upholstery.
WTF!

Not to mention, if you were there opening night-the mood was electric-everyone came back to sit at their same bar stools and continue the conversations where they left off years ago. It was like nothing changed-it was GREAT-just like you would expect a real life Cheers to be Also, try the Buffalo chicken wing soup. Surprisingly very good!
for those who are putting the decor down...come on, get real--don't judge a book by its cover. TRY it before you KNOCK it!

indeed,
I am struck by the realization of the interior decor's pointlessness
the window may be up or down,
it is of no consequence

Anyone who insults The Place just doesn't understand... If they don't have Tom & Jerry's this winter, I'll burn it down!

You people are sucking the life out of me. Is your sense of fashion and style that good? Is it even important in a pub? Buffalo is full of complaining naysayers and down right jerks!!!
What's wrong when an old favorite corner bar/restaurant reopens and all people can do is complain.
This is like telling adults a kindergarten lesson about the golden rule.
Assaroni and Bhorvath, you can both go to . . . . a different city. I took a second to peruse BHorvath's comments and they are mainly negative and insulting to Buffalo and others. You're a professional? Then get off the blog and go back to work.

right on mplizga811! The chicken noodle is the simply the bomb and The Place was always my favorite burger! I remember being a little kid getting a taste of the meringue that tops the Tom and Jerry and eagerly awaiting the day that I could have my own. My family has "Tom and Jerry" mug souvenirs and The Place St. Patty's buttons. Christmas has not been the same without the Place. Hello, Joe Head singing Silent Night!! Losing the Place was even worse than losing the Royal Pheasant and the Rendezvous. To have The Place back is like a lost dog being returned. Cheers to we, the denizens of The Place and Kenny for making it happen :-) Margigi

Matt - I did leave. I work at my pleasure, thank you.
This blog is getting back to being the bastion of unbridled illogical positvism that it used to be. I'll have to come back more often.
The logical premises of BROs comment bloggers: 1. All things in Buffalo are great 2. All things are greater in the Elmwood Village 3. All food in Buffalo is great 4. Save all dilapadated buildings 5. Gang up on those who disagree, tell them to leave
Hmm, I wonder if that is going to get the city back on economic trend with the rest of the country.
I bet more than half the people in Buffalo would leave if they had the chance. Oh, now I'll hear about the 50 of us who came back over the last couple years. I think alot of us left.
It just looks silly guys to be so aggressively positive. Outside of one or two neighborhoods the place is what it is, stop trying to make it otherwise. I saw firsthand how impossible it is to a. attract and maintain skilled labor to the area, b. attract modern manufacturing to the area (even when we give land away), c. get people to see that hype and elitism does not make a city better.

sooo if you left buffalo and buffalo is a hopeless piece of crap city with no hope of ever being better than it is right now, why are you on a blog dedicated to talking about it?

I absolutely never have believed or advocated that Buffalo is a "crap city". It is my hometown, I am proud of it.
I just have a different viewpoint on what it takes to make a city rise, and I have a real nerve (it seems) for those who think that raving about all things is what it will take to make that happen again. It is a sign of desperation and it actually puts off some of those who may want to better it.
Nothing moves forward in a technology driven society without deep criticism and rethought. The only things BRO is critical of are absentee landlords and the lack of bike racks. That's just not gonna move the city forward.

Hi there Kooks, sweetie. Long time no talk to! I wonder if this place has a juke-box. Do you think they play Max Webster on it? Kooks, how 'bout this? I was going to leave this blog, but you have convinced me to stay. In fact, consider me a regular from now on. I think i like the looks of "The Place". Maybe you, Kooks, and I, Grace, can dance to Dean Martin or maybe Aldo Nova and then talk about Jim Kelly for a while. Then you can take me to your home right before you get a six pack of Genny Cream Ale. I love you. Grace
