Alan Kay, known for his early work in object-oriented programming and co-developer of the 100$ laptop once said, "People who are really serious about software, should make their own hardware."

We feel the same way about local media--that if you're serious about it, you need to play some role in crafting the platform on which it's served. So one of the things we've been doing in the background is developing a new version of Buffalo Rising Online.

What's driving the seismic shift we see in the media industry at large and the local media landscape specifically is one very simple, very powerful, very transformative new reality: Media is and always will be something people want...but technology is how they get it and how they make it themselves.

We've been working on a platform of community building and content delivery tools that blur the line between blogs and more fully featured online media experiences. We've developed some new tools that aim to help users do more things with content they find interesting and helpful: subscribe to it, bookmark it, talk with others about it, and find out more about the people they're talking to.

Hyperlocal experiences should look and feel less like homework and more like the place they're about. Buffalo is, particularly now, an exciting and dynamic place. The media that serves it ought to be as well.

Monday afternoon we'll be back to show you what we mean.
