A Farmers Market - Hertel Has It

A Farmers Market - Hertel Has It

Story Options

This past weekend a friend of mine came to town from the outskirts of Boston (not Boston, NY). She told me that although she lives minutes from a number of farms, she really loves the farmers markets that she has attended in Buffalo. That took me by surprise, but at the same time, I know what she means. To be able to go to one place and find such an eclectic mix of healthy produce... and of course the residents who attend always make for excellent people watching.

Now residents of North Buffalo can tout their own farmers market - a market that will launch July 23rd and will feature (so far) Hens Honey Bee Farm, Rizzo Farm, Sweet Temptations du Jour, Yancey's Fancy Cheese, Pasta Temptations, Chateau Buffalo/Dancing Buffalo Cidre, Deb's Delights and Summertime Blooms. Vendors from the Buffalo Indie Market will also be on hand to contribute to the diversity of the market. Thanks to the efforts of Holy Spirit Church, Chateau Buffalo, Pride of New York and the Buffalo Indie Market, the Hertel Market has found enough support to get off the ground. And just like the Riverside, University District, Bidwell, and Downtown markets, the Hertel Market will need plenty of support from the neighborhood to launch successfully.

*Vendors at the Hertel Avenue Farmers Market (located in the Holy Spirit Church parking lot at the corner of Hertel and Delaware Avenues) will sell their wares from 3 pm – 6:30 pm every Wednesday July 23rd through October.

For more info on the event, as well as many other Hertel activities, visit the new Hertel website.

Bad timing- it should go until 7:30 which would allow people to get home from work and walk over.

Yes, later, and possibly later in the week, like Friday night, OR, Sunday morning. Avoiding the market-saturated Saturday makes sense.

Sunday is a popular farmer's market day in other regions. Churchgoers would be a built-in customer base.

And the rest of us could go, too.

I'm thrilled to finally get a farmer's market in my neighborhood! But I completely agree about the timing. I don't get home from work until 6, so it's gonna make it hard to ever go. Hopefully those involved are reading this... maybe try 4 to 7 or 7:30pm if it's a weeknight. Sunday morning would be even better. Regardless, I wish it well and will try and run over there to support it tomorrow. And the Buffalo Indie Market folks are a bonus too!

Church goers would mean that the parking lot they plan on setting up shop on would be full of cars. I doubt they would allow it.

If the market is busy enough, none of the vendors will just pack up their tents at 6:30 and go. Organizers will also most likely make a determination at that time if they should extend their hours.

    Nice job Hertel!

yeah this type of event can be flexible with the crowds and if they get a consistent rush at the end I bet they would shift the hours. But without actually knowing 6 - 6:30 is more than enough time for most people to get home and there. I know I get home around 5:30 - 6pm each day from my work and the bars and restaurants already usually have a good crowd up and down hertel. So I think many people can make it where if you push it too late then it might start to infringe on evening plans. Either way we will see how it turns out. hopefully it will be a little longer lasting than the last market on hertel.

I cant wait to check this out only a couple blocks away! I agree with the timing, hopefully it will last a little bit later during the summer and extended daylight time anways. I usually don't get home from my work and errands until about 7 or so either.

Now this is where I kinda get confirmation as to just how moronic and retarded Buffalonians and Buffalo businesses are.....

If Hertel and Elmwood are successful then why not South Park & Abbott, why not Genessee & Broadway as an example

If a Farmers Market is successful on the westside and northside then why not on the eastside and southside

The stupidity of Buffalonians never ceases to amaze me because if I were a business person...I would constantly be looking for new location...especially if I could open my businesss in a cluster of 10 other businesses....even if their no more than tents in farmers markets or such.

How stupid it is for the Hertel Buisiness Association and the Elmwood Association to not partner with the eastside and southside so businesses can add a 2nd or 3rd or 4th store location......which would benefit the city as a whole.

That's good. I thought that they were actually going to put this in a storefront across the street (maybe it will end up being a market as well). It makes Hertel that much more walkable (well, for me at least ;) ).

@buffaloweiner: I don't know about Elmwood, but the Hertel Business Association is kind of small and focused on turning Hertel into Little Italy. That's not to say that a business or neighborhood association in South Buffalo or the East Side can't step up and be the point on expanding business opportunities there. The East Side association will also have to overcome the negative perception that it is a crime-ridden area around where the businesses would locate. Arranging for increased and visible police presence, street/neighborhood cleanups, and other activities that show that the neighborhood cares will go a long way to helping transform those areas into really nice spots and help push reinvestment into those neighborhoods. It'll take a lot of work and some time, but it can be done and the effort will be more than worth it.

    buffaloweiner,

It would be my guess that these markets are started by the people that live and do business in these neighborhoods. If someone on the East Side or South part of the city want to start a farmers market, it has been my experience that the people that run these existing, small grassroots organizations are usually happy to help offer advice or assistance when approached. Perhaps the citizens of these neighborhoods and their business owners could work together to bring a farmers market to their neighborhood just as Elmwood and Hertel Avenue neighborhoods have.

Additionally, I'd like to note that one of our coolest farmers markets--Clinton-Bailey--is already on the East Side and is open more days and longer hours than any other market--with perhaps the exception of the North Tonawanda market.

Hey- I went to the market this afternoon- and bought all my ingredients for Ratatouille- and it was great. The market was good also, although I was disappointed to not see Yancey's Fancy Cheese, but the market looked to be doing very well.

    Hey buffaloweiner...

The Hertel North Buffalo Business Association has absolutely nothing to do with the new Hertel Farmers Market, nor does it have anything to do with HertelHasIt.com. These marketing efforts are the result of a few dedicated local businesses, farmers, and a church. They were created to raise the quality of life for residences, businesses, workers and visitors of the area.

Anyone can start a farmers market. It just takes some passion, time and the cooperation of like minded people. BTW, there is also a market on Broadway, it's called The Broadway Market! Word has it that there are big changes in the works for it. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
