The Great Outdoors At Astoria
That's what you'll find at Astoria on Elmwood. The eatery's back patio is now open and they're grilling some mean burgers... what else could you ask for on a warm, sunny day? Astoria's interior was recently retrofitted with a couple wrap-around high-back seating additions, but it is their awesome patio that you want to hit when the warm weather arrives. The elevated wooden platform deck is surrounded by a number of brick buildings that give the space a pseudo courtyard feel. The covered deck offers plenty of shade on sunny days and provides shelter from the occasional storm. The patio even has outdoor speaker boxes piping out low background music overhead. This is also where the hanging flower baskets and tiki torches can be found... our waiter informed us that the fire and flora will be arriving very soon.
There are plenty of seats available, 44 in total, and a wait station has also been added to expedite the filling of water glasses and the changing of table settings. Astoria's kitchen is situated a few yards from the patio, so when the food's a cookin' everyone outside knows it.
Astoria's menu offers a variety of different cuisine choices. There is a section devoted to Greek sandwiches that sounded delicious... and my eye spied a marinated portabella selection that was very tempting. My companions decided to take advantage of the Greek fare, so they went with the open chicken souvlaki grilled and served on skewers. After smelling the cooking burgers for a while, I opted to get one. I ended up choosing the spinach and feta combo mostly due to such an unusual pairing of toppings. The souvlaki dishes were huge hits at the table, and my burger was one of the juiciest ones I had eaten in a long time. The toasted sesame bun was an added bonus.
If you're in the mood for some good food in a casual outdoor setting, make sure that you add Astoria to your list of 'go-tos'. It's always a nice surprise to see the look on people's faces when they visit for the first time. No one ever expects to see such a grand patio attached to this quaint Elmwood eatery.

I absolutely love this restaurant, and the patio is fantastic.
I had a wonderful swordfish shishkebob with grilled veggies and rice the other day with a glass of white wine on a warm Buffalo spring evening.

Such an underrated restaurant - that patio makes it a world away, yet right off of Elmwood. I'd love to see more people going there! Hopefully they're doing well....
