The Elmwood Market Is Set To Open

After attending the opening of The Jenny Shop a couple of us swung up Elmwood and stopped into The Elmwood Market. Not only did an attractive new sign catch our eye, we couldn't help but notice that the place was looking pretty well stocked. Once we stepped inside we were immediately taken with the numerous old photos of built Buffalo from days gone by. I was especially impressed with a large print of the Guaranty Building that wrapped the back doorway. Above the rows of product we saw images of Shelton Square, old Buffalo bridges, locally manufactured products, boats on Hoyt Lake, immigrant workers, grain elevators, and numerous identifiable landmarks.

We were so preoccupied with the historic photos that we kept forgetting to ask about other important details... like when was the market opening. We were told that they were shooting for an opening as early as this Friday. But if things were looking tight, they didn't want to open if they were not full prepared, which meant that Monday is also a good possibility. I noticed that the owners were already sporting their black Elmwood Market t-shirts, and a number of employees were buzzing about stocking the shelves and breaking down boxes.

There is a coffee bar set up along the front of the store looking out onto Elmwood. When I asked why there were no stools I was told that the market did not want to promote unnecessary loitering. If someone wanted to rest a few minutes while preparing their coffee at the bar, then that was great... or even browsing through a magazine would be cool. The market has a policy stating that no single cans or bottles of beer are to be sold. Right off the bat the owners are making it clear that this is to be a place where everyone is to feel welcome as long as they are not disruptive to other shoppers (you would think that other markets on the street would have similar policies).

With plenty of parking, a friendly attitude, fresh and clean interior and a good array of products, Alex, Dale and Tony at the Elmwood Market should do just fine. Check out a word from all of them in regards to their opening.

The Elmwood Village Market is located in the former DVD.Dot location (corner of Elmwood and North) - parking lot off to the side.

Thank the new owners for the elimination of single bottles/cans of beer sales. I truly feel this will have an impact. If it does, they can be the benchmark for the city to revise the laws governing either the square footage or annual sales. I performed this research a few years ago using data from a grocery chain in Monroe County, NY. There have been other cities that have used this method such as Cincinnati, OH and it works. It will be an interesting case study, indeed.

It's looking pretty conventional on those shelves. UNFI can hook them up for all the organics.

I hope the store has a good run and stays there. Keep it safe, lit and police friendly there, that area needs this bad right now.

Bravo for setting a standard and not allowing single beer sales!!!!!! In a city of 40ozer deli's and 2 dollar beer halls I love it! Not to mention it looks bright and clean, another 1st for an allentown Deli. Looks like a spot I can run to to pick up a few quick supplies [even lettuce by the looks of it] betwwen regular grocory runs.

I can't wait to check it out. It' nice that they guarantee the lowest prices since trekking out to Wegmans to beat the Coop and Tops Niagara prices can be a chore.

Agreed, also, the owners should keep an close eye on the exterior and parking lot for loitering. Worse than loitering in the store is hangers-on outside hiding in the parking lot and at the doors.

Keep up the good work guys. Can't wait to stop in.

Did they install counter to ceiling glass for the cashier area? The Sunoco (Elmwood & Bryant) was robbed a bunch of times before they finally secured the cashiers with bullet resistant glass.

There is a sign on the windows stating they will be open on Monday the 17th. I'm very excited about the no singles rule and the lack of stools. Its going to be tough enough for them to compete in the area they are in, they do not need the stress of excessive loitering pushing away business.
