Take A Seat At The VBM

For those of you who may not have heard, Village Beer Merchants now has a license to sell beer. I checked out the selection earlier and was very impressed with the stock. The owners tell me that they easily have the largest selection of beer in the city and are still waiting to get a couple more lines in. Other than tons of different beer selections, the shelves are filling up even more with gourmet pastas, rice, and specialty baking supplies. Just click here to get a sampling of the other offerings available.
I asked the owners what has surprised them the most about the market since opening and they told me, "The support from people in the suburbs." Huh? It appears that the business has been graciously supported by the neighborhood, and at the same time people are coming into the city to stock up on the offered goods. Now they'll even have a place to sit when they order their lunches.

Carl Paladino is shaking it up once again, and next to the calling for the toll barriers to come down, this may be a hit with the general public.
"I'm asking our legislative candidates to vote for a Constitutional Convention," Paladino said. "This can happen every twenty years, the last time being 1996, but it hasn't been done since 1938."
Paladino's objective, he says, is to get both houses to vote by majority for a referendum on the ballot. This, he explains, would put to vo …
The Nicole Kidman/Studio Arena hoax that recently hit the media is an opportunity for some discussion about the way news travels these days, and begs comment on the phrase "Any publicity is good publicity".
After speaking with someone closely related to Studio Arena, who wishes to stay anonymous, it seems like the Kidman hoax was timed perfectly—in order to circumvent corroboration—and named just the right names in order to look plausible. Add to that the fact that many of t …

Now that the Senecas have suspended construction on both their embattled Buffalo Creek Casino and an expansion on their Salamanca site, the question is for how long and why.
Seneca Gaming Corporations (SGC) Public Relations Manager Philip Pantano says that the time frame is indefinite and the reason is based on a downturn in casino operations across the country, though he says the Seneca facilities have experienced growth of double-digit increases in the last two quarters.

They need to expand the menu using products they already have, they have staff capable of more creations and production and that would be well received. Nice people, they deserve good things.

the building is for sale...1.3M, I belive an out of town co. paid half that last year. Maybe a new buyer will operate the JM space. If the restaurant operator owns the building chances are they will make it there.

Possibly this is my next lunch stop on Saturday and day's off. Any recommendations on sandwiches or soups that are available at the VBM?

Are we sure suburbanites come into the city? I mean it's so "dangerous". Perhaps VBM is challenging an "urban legend" of Buffalo here? The next time I drive from Amherst to the Lex Co-op to do my weekly shopping, or to drop my daughter off at daycare, or to go out to dinner, or to go to work, or to go for a run, AND to stock up at the VBM, I'll have to be sure to see if there really are any of my fellow suburbanites in the city. (Note: hint of mid-week sarcasm).

ANOTHER VBM article but still no mention of the Studio Arena Closing?! Yeah... Buffalo's "rising."
Back on point. VBM is nice. Decent brew selection, like the deli element.
But let's not kid ourselves. Consumer is still by far the best outlet for beer selection in the area... they just don't happen to have a store within the city limits (as far as I know), and thus don't warrant coverage by Elmwood Rising. Huge selection, taps that rotate constantly, more than enough of the basics if that's what you desire... best of the best.
That said, I will continue to support VBM as well. However, if they REALLY want to differentiate themselves, I suggest VBM start carrying beer that isn't distributed in NY. Take a long weekend to drive through neighboring states (Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, maybe down to the mid-Atlantic, more into the Mid-West) to pick up some craft brews that you can't get in NY throuh distributors and sell a few six packs to interested customers. Maybe start a monthly email newsletter for customers, letting them know what's in stock, and what "non-distributed" brews are in-store.
Short of something like that, I'll still take the time to drive past VBM on my way to Consumer... most, not all, of the time.

Allstar - I think you have to put into perspective the fact that BR is not a legetimate news source and it is the BR mission to spread good will and good news. Lord knows we get our fill of bad news from all the other sources. It does seem a bit sappy at times but the idea is to build positive vibes, something that has sadly been missing in our area for a very long time. If you want news read the BN, if you want a glimpse into the brigher side read BR.
And cool idea about the beers Allstars, they can come back with Fat Tire and Bohemia.

That would be great, except for the fact that its illegal. I'd be overjoyed if I could get the likes of Bells or Founders locally but it doesn't make much sense for a new business to risk it's license over having a few extra beers.
There are a bunch of quality beers legally distributed in NY State that don't get to Buffalo - Hair of the Dog & Alesmith to name a few on my short list. Rather than bring in stock they can't legally have, VBM should focus on these labels for now.
As for Consumers, I agree that BR's policy of 'city only' is shortsighted. Still, VBM has, to this point, been quite competitive with Consumers. Some bottles are slightly more expensive, others slightly less. While the Elmwood consumers might have a few more varieties in stock than VBM their stock often moves too slowly (check out the best by date on the Ruination next time you're in there.)

Allstar I was just there last night and they have a very comprable if not better selection of beers for my tastes than Premier. Beer is all about taste and they have something for everyone. And they even have a few beers that they claim are "New to NY" so maybe you should try going there and seeing what they have before you assume premier is better. I am not saying that premier isn't good. It's an amazing place and they do have more space and therefore more overall selection. That should in no way discount the purpose of the VBM and someone else willing to make some money and invest in the city. Competition is good. And who knows if the VBM takes off maybe it could become as big as Premier.
Plus I can walk there instead of the necessity to drive to Premier for a good beer.

somewhereGreen - It isn't illegal if the owners buy a few six packs on their own, and sell them to you or I as fans of good beer. Perhaps we meet up and exchange $ for beer at VBM, perhaps we don't. Perhaps they do this favor for seven or eight of us, and we all reimburse them for their trouble. Either way, I see it as friends doing favors for friends and exchanging beer.
platt4 - I don't even know what WNYMedia is, so save the histrionics for someone more deserving. It was a joke. Sounds like you need a little more fiber in your diet.
sbrof - I never ONCE mentioned Premier. Why did you? I wouldn't disagree VBM has a selection comparable to Premier's at all. I was comparing VBM to CONSUMER... go back and read my post. And despite your ridiculous claim, there was no "assumption" made about VBM... I've actually BEEN there (filled a growler, got a sixer), liked it, and will go again. I just prefer Consumer and don't think it is disputable they have a selection superior to VBM's. Jesus H. Christ, did you even READ my post, knucklehead? Methinks your reading comprehension is lacking...

somewhereGreen - perhaps I don't understand the full scope of the law. Is it illegal to even POSSESS these beers in NY? Because I've enjoyed Bells (Expedition Stout is easily an all-time favorite of mine) and Founders around here before (thanks to "Petey"). If not, I don't see why one of our friends at the VBM, who maybe just happens to be travelling out of state, can't pick up some beer he knows his friends would like, and they reimburse him for it.
Just a thought. Yeah, its pushing the envelope and I can see where they'd want to shy away from it, but I don't see how they would get in trouble for it. Stupid laws...

woops, premier, consumers, same story. Both are larger more established names. Still doesn't explain why you feel that BRO is somehow doing injustice to the beer community by posting articles on the VBM.
Isn't there a consumers on Hertel near Military.. Maybe that's Black Rock Beverage. There is one on Broadway near Bailey near the Broadway Market.. Plus BRO has referred to going there (CB) for specialty beers in a couple past cooking and beer volumes. I remember being directed to the Consumer's Beverage's website before through the articles. I don't think they are doing one injustice or the other. VBM is new and getting press, I am sure eventually BRO will get around to another Consumer's article or reference as well.

WilliamZabka, Didn't mean to imply that the beers were illegal - just not approved for sale in the state. I'd be overjoyed if I could head to VBM and get Expedition or Founder's Centennial as a 'friend' but I don't think that the liquor control board would be too happy about that occuring through a beer store.
Believe me, whenever someone I know goes on a road trip I give them a list of stuff to bring back :)

Every state has different liquor laws so distributing beer from one state to another requires some footwork on the part of its rep. Unless it could be a big seller, why bother? That's why none of you will be tasting Steamworks Ale from Durango brewing, or Left Coast Raputin anytime soon. Sorry.

im about to go check this place out, i doubt it has more beer selection then Premier Gourmet or even consumers.... they need a website big time. It will help there business, with a beer list, or atleast a "Whats on tap?" posting for us beer lovers.

So i checked it out, they have a pretty decent beer selection. But saying that they have the biggest beer selection in the city? far from it. They did have stone brews in stock and any place that carries any stone beer makes me happy. But Premier Gourmet has about 2x as many varieties of craft brews and specialty beers. Its a cool little store, it will do well in that area. But i live in tonawanda premier gourmet is about 7 minutes away and the consumers on sheridan is about 5 minutes. They do have some cool specialty food items, and i will probably stop in to eat. But a real website is well needed like i said before. Especially for seeing what they have on tap, or whats coming up. That will attract some beer snobs like myself and my friends to come down if they have something good on tap.

I'd just like to point out that VBM claims to have the best beer selection in the city, and we agree. Premier is not in the city, it's in Tonawanda.
