Sweet Tooth Changes It Up

Sweet Tooth will now feature themed nights, four nights per week, Wednesday through Saturday. Wednesdays will bring 'Classic Dessert Night', during which Newton and her staff will offer up a sweet based on favorite desserts of days gone by. Each Wednesday, customers will have the opportunity to purchase desserts that our grandmother's loved—strawberry rhubarb pie, Boston Cream cake, Baked Alaska—for only $4 (and that includes a cup of coffee).
On Thursdays, 'New Dessert Night', Sweet Tooth's bakers will feature something that they feel reflects the season, like Strawberry Napoleons or Mango Lime Fruit Tarts.
Friday is 'Family Night', and kids will receive 50% off of their chosen sweet with the purchase of an adult dessert. Finally, Saturday night is 'Dessert by Candlelight Night'.
A few weeks ago when Buffalo participated in the global effort to conserve energy by turning its lights off for an hour, Sweet Tooth played along as well. “It was really cool, “ Newton said, “and people loved it. The candlelight brings a sense of quiet with it—couldn't we all use a little more quiet?” Quiet isn't all that accompanies Sweet Tooth's Candlelight Nights; romance does too.

Venerable bakeries like Sweet Tooth make a living from reproducing time-tested recipes for loyal customers. When I asked Newton about her motivation for the integration of new desserts, she spoke of her desire to branch out and offer things that were fresh, seasonal, and even better, local. “I love what we do here, and that people love our specialty cakes, but I want to have the opportunity to work with what our area has to offer, and with the weather. I want to be able to use all of our great apples in a dessert in October. Offering up classics and new desserts twice a week will give us the chance to do that.”

During my visit, the staff at Sweet Tooth was readying itself for a busy summer. The ice cream cases were being defrosted and thoroughly cleaned in anticipation of this week's delivery of 24 popular flavors. I'm excited to sample some of the many desserts that Newton and her staff will develop for their themed nights. Aren't you?

It was a beautiful day for Sunday brunch, so the only choice was a restaurant that still had an open patio, where the food was going to be great.
Betty's it was. Not only was I able to have my Jack Russell terrier tableside next to the short, flower box laden fence, but I got to sit in the sun. The angle was steep for noon, a telling sign of shorter days, and if you don't believe me, look at the shadow the home fries cast.
Betty's is one of those places where you'll run into pe …
There have been many reincarnations at 752 Elmwood Avenue over the past couple of years. Wasabi is the newest restaurant nestled next door to Fowlers Chocolates and right across the street from Spot Coffee. When you enter you are greeted with exposed brick, sleek furniture and a gleaming sushi bar where colorful sashimi sits like little gems in a glass case. It is a small restaurant that can seat 12 at the tables and about 10 at the bar. Sitting at the sushi bar is a treat and ent …
The day Edritos opened on Elmwood Avenue several years ago, I was a happy man. I powered down more than my fair share of burritos back in those days. When it moved downtown into the Key Center, I no longer frequented the establishment. I just wasn’t downtown often enough to stop in. But Edritos has moved again, this time to Hertel Avenue between Parkside and Wallace.
My wife and I dropped by for takeout earlier today. I am pleased to report that my burrito was as delicious as …
Marcos Vargas has had a slew of restaurant locations around the West Side of Buffalo in his 24 years of doing business here, but the latest move to Niagara Street has got to be the best yet.
Vargas hails from Puerto Rico. Before Buffalo, he had restaurants in New Jersey and on 57th Street in Brooklyn. This is a family business, and customer loyalty is built in, which is one of the reasons Vargas manages to keep his prices so low. You can get your salty/sweet and crunchy craving …

I love Sweet Tooth but can they please get rid of that BUM that hangs out in front, the one who sleeps there with his head resting on his shoes. That guy drives me crazy. I saw him using the sidewalk as a bathroom one day, I'm not talking # 1 either.

What Sweet Tooth really needs to do is some physical improvements. I LOVE their stuff, but the exterior and interior leave a lot to be desired compared to the old location. It's just lacking appeal, and therefore, doesn't do justice to the delightful desserts.
An ice cream and sweet spot needs to be cute....needs to have sweet-ness. I stopped in last night and was the only one there. I was getting stuff to go, so when I left there was nobody there at 7 p.m. on a nice Friday night when the old location would have been packed.
