New skatepark news. The drive to get a free, public skatepark in downtown Buffalo has picked up momentum. As the OLA (off-leash area in LaSalle Park) has shown, small, active parks can bring vitality back to underused park space. We have seen an abundance of use not just during the warm weather months, but the cooler months as well.

Jay “Micropark” McCarthy and the Buffalo MicroPark Board of Directors are putting the final touches on the proposal for a downtown skateplaza. They have continued to assemble a development team which now includes landscape architects Renata Neidzwiecka Kraft from Bergmann Associates and Mark van der Zalm from van der Zalm + Associates and Newline Skateparks Incorporated. Newline has extensive experience consulting, designing and constructing skateparks across the United States and Canada with over 80 projects to their credit. That means that there should be relatively few design problems as many of the cities that host these parks reflect a variety of seasons and climates.

Downtown Buffalo has underused park space that would be ideal for an urban skateplaza. The prime parcel that is being examined is the underutilized public space under the ramps of the freeway near Pear Street Brew Pub. The ramps offer protection from the elements while the layout already follows many of the requirements for a successful skateplaza. Skateplazas are a type of skatepark that resemble the type of public parks that are most coveted by skateboarders and BMXers.

vanc-skate.jpg Plazas can be built for low cost and require very minimal upkeep. A downtown skateplaza will not only attract skateboarders and BMXers to the park but will draw people to watch as well. The park in question is a mere minute from the Canal Side development and the newly proposed Outlook Beach. This would give entire families the ability to come downtown to enjoy the conveniences before grabbing a lunch at The Hatch or any one of the restaurants in the Cobblestone District. As the OLA has shown, small, active parks can bring vitality back to underused park space.

Check out the Newline designs for the Wilmington, DE (first) and Vancouver, BC (second) skateplazas. Then see the proposed Buffalo skateplaza area below. proposed-buffalo-skateplaza.jpg

Awesome! I'm not a skateboarder, and couldn't even if I tried, but I am pretty excited about this. The area proposed is pretty under-utilized and un-populated all the time, so it will be great to get some activity in this area.

This is a great opportunity for micropark's to bring life to parts of buffalo that are mostly vacant. Think about the dog park and how many people now spend their time using that land. A skatepark would help create a sports enthused atmosphere and would probably serve as a catalyst to get more things done around the waterfront. Buffalo should also think about a water park/ whitewater course downtown. A place where people could whitewater kayak, raft, or even surf. Since its illegal to kayak the lower Niagara(shouldn't be) we should build something people can.

What in the world was that circle under the thruway ever used for?

    YEAH!!! YEAH!!! YEAH!!! YEAH!!! YEAH!!!

I really hope this happens. I recently picked up a new board from JP @ Sunday. My first new deck in about 16 years. It would be awesome to have a dedicated place to fall on my ass (I'm a bit rusty). A place I could go to relieve some stress w/o upsetting the downtown, private property, management and security employees.

If more, phone call/letter writing to local politicos is needed to help move this along let it be known to whom they should be addressed.

LarkinLot. Didn't you know? This is where the Buffalo Power-brokers of the mid 70's gathered for their monthly sacrificial seance.

It is rumored that the 'We're Talkin' Proud" logo was devised during one of these ceremonies. Right in that very circle.

it it weren't for all those cobble stone features there, it would have been a skate park already with zero additional investment.

the free roof of I-190 is a nice bonus. where most park goers want to be out in the sun, the protection from the hot sun in good weather, and the rain when its not so nice would be favorable to this type of user.

Great idea and a perfect use of an ugly side of the thruways. Anything that helps to bridge the mental divide from one side of the 190 to the other is a win for downtown and our waterfront. Most of these places are perceived as no man's land where undesirables might hang out (not really but perceived).

    Move this project forward!

When I made did the Erie Canal Terminus overlay map I discovered where the Liberty Pole once stood, it's right under the 190 next to the Main in front of the Aud parking lot as shown below:

The full map map be seen here. Fabulous idea, already with an all-weather roof in place.

Good to hear this is coming along, I've followed the letters with Sam Hoyt over at Sunday it's good to see it coming towards fruition. When I was a kid right downthe way from there we had a makeshift park going, more towards the aud. The area was vacant and we didn't get in anyone's way and vice versa. perfect spot, and I really hope it pans out

Damp - Thanks for the alert but I'll only mention one state-funded { deleted, filth } feel-good pork project per month. January's was the "vacant house mural painting for peace" thing. Seemed like a classic.

If a skatepark goes here, which would be great, what is going to happen to the cobblestones there? Assuming that they are going to keep whatever base is there.

Great project and location...I remember looking at that site a few years ago and felt the urge to host drum circles there - the site looked so unloved, but yet has a ton of potential. A skatepark - heck yeah! I also like those cities that are building downtown kayak waterparks...order one of those up too!

Thanks urbanboarder and buffaloed! I'm working on more maps, my current project is the Richardson Complex, then plan on doing a railroad overlay map--a massive project considering the coverage area.

hey george, i was just looking at your stuff - pretty fun. it reminded me of the cemetery that used to exist @hertel & delaware. it would be a fun project (well not for me :), but if you were ever feeling ambitious . . .), to do an overlay of old cemeteries.

i wonder how people would react to finding out they were living, driving, shopping (as in the walgreens on delaware and north), or going to school (as in city honors) on old cemetery.

    BOOO!

al-alo I never noticed the cemetery on the NE corner of Hertel (then Bird Ave) and Delaware, it wasn't on the 1866 Atlas I used for Cornelius Creek but see in on the 1880. There was also one on West Ferry and Delaware, when they widened Ferry a few unmarked graves were discovered...much like the recent surprises at City Honors. Yeah, I'll do that one.

i saw it on an old map i have. although im not entirely sure the date, id guess 1890's or so. i was kind of struck that there was a creek running thru the graveyard. i hope nobody downstream was drinking that water.

al-alo, found it on the 1880 Buffalo Atlas, and that was Cornelius Creek. It must not have been there for very long-or simply wasn't included on other maps. By the way, traces of Cornelius Creek still existed in the late 1950's-early 1960's when I lived on Homer Avenue. My best friend Jimmy Schaus' house sat right on top of the path of the old creek, and as kids we would occasionally find water bubbling out out of the ground in his backyard. Also, there was a small lake or marsh between Delaware and Elmwood (near channel 4) where the creek once ran...as kids we would find old metal storage tubs and go boating!
