Sample Shines On Allen

We were impressed by the unusual offerings, that is for sure… and we were equally impressed by the surroundings. Formerly Allentown Music (moved onto Elmwood), Sample has evolved into a sleek eatery that Karim Rashid would be proud of.
The orange glow from the mezzanine lights – the custom bronze-colored railing system constructed by Steel Crazy (at the corner) – the backlit, modernist fabric wall hangings with designs from Elmwood Village Fabrics - even the funky glassware cries out cool.
Tonight (Friday the 9th) is the restaurant’s grand opening. The second level will surely be the place to be this weekend, as will the center bar along with the barstool window seats. Warm-glowing candles adorn every little nook to entice walker-bys to step in from out in the cold… Sample is a welcome addition to the west end of Allen. Located at 242 Allen Street.

New Era Cap Co. is making moves to place Buffalo on the map as a premier destination for young baseball players looking to compete in a large-scale baseball tournament. The New Era Cup Classic runs the weekends of July 17th-20th and July 31st-August 3rd, 2008.
On the final day of each weekend, championship games will be held at Dunn Tire Park. The baseball tournament, the first of its kind from New Era, will attract over 140 elite youth baseball teams, an estimated 3,500 play …
Last night, downtown Buffalo witnessed an historic moment at the Erie Canal Harbor when it presented its first ever “Official” City of Buffalo fireworks bash there. Thousands of people spent the day watching live bands rock the pier as people made their way in and out of the maze of paths and canal era ruins.
Buffalo Place arranged for live music on the new pier throughout the day with music from Wendell Rivera Latin Jazz Ensemble, Boys of Summer, Rod Nickson Project, Jac …
Calling all filmmakers, ages 14 and up, to participate in an I Love New York Competition, with great prizes, celebrity judges, and hopefully your short film.
The competition requests filmmakers to produce a short film depicting their own views of the "I Love New York" motto. When dreaming up your take on this famous motto, keep in mind the beauty, diversity, and geography of New York State. In addition films will be judged by how well they highlight unique features and off-the …
So after fireworks and celebrations on Friday and Saturday, some, if not many, Buffalonians will no doubt be hung over and tired. That’s okay. Take Sunday, skip church, and sleep in till the afternoon. Just make sure you’re up and ready to go around 2:30 PM so you can make it on time to Cozumel Grill for Sunday Bloody Sunday.
Between 3 and 6 PM, Cozumel at 153 Elmwood Avenue runs drink specials on Bloody Mary’s and Vodka drinks. A Blood Mary will only cost you $4.50 and a V …

We'll have an update sometime today or over the weekend. The menus were arriving today (hopefully), and last night the owners were busy attending to a packed crowd (pre-party). I'm expecting an email that will also include their new phone number.

I think the city if finally seeing the emergence of a new, trendy neighborhood. I live around the corner, in Arlington Park, and can attest that Allentown still has the usual suspects, often a product of Friends of the Night People...however great things are happening.
Days Park has made a nice comeback, with houses being remodeled...several new restaurants/stores, including Allen Street Hardware, the new wine bar next door, La Tee Dah, Steel Crazy, Sweet Tooth, and several more commercial establishments either around the corner on Elmwood or on the way. Several restoration projects can be found along College, Mariner, Arlington Park, and even North Street between Elmwood and Symphony Circle.
If only someone could buy the apartment buildings on Allen/lower Mariner and convert them to condos or luxury apartments - I think the neighborhood would explode. I also would recommend putting a really nice grocery store, like Dash's, in the plaza Latina presently occupies. Latina's, at that location, is just bad...empty shelves, poor service, etc...

Its too bad Buffalo isnt a trendy city, a place like this would flourish in NYC or any other progressive city. Buffalo is Beer, sangwiches, Fish fries, etc. The closest thing to an upscale bar is Hardware which is a very average bar in any other city. Best of luck this place looks very very cool!!!

Frankie, ever been to Prespa, Laughlins, sidebar or shadow just to name a few off the top of my head? Very nice places, far from the drab never changing place you seem to envision this city as.. Sorry if they don't kick people out for wearing jeans or a Sabres shirts or jeans like those more trendy places in other cities. I am ok not being THE trendy place, because that immediately draws lines in the sand and creates "undesirables" and well that's NOT the buffalo I know.

Prespa is bad IKEA, Laughlins is black paint and brick (wow), Sidebar blah, Shadow, cheektowaga-ish... Empire Grill and Toro are two good designs... Sample place looks genuinely cool...
Now go back to Brick Bar across the street lol
