Running—or Volunteering—For a Good Cause

The race is scheduled for Sunday, May 25, beginning at 7:00AM in front of the Hyatt Regency hotel. The Buffalo Marathon attracts runners of all types, from the highly competitive to those new to the sport of running. Participants can sign up to run in the full marathon, the half marathon or as part of a relay team.
Hosting an event of this size takes a considerable amount of work…and bodies.
“To pull off an event of this magnitude requires a few hundred volunteers,” said John Beishline, race director. “We are looking for some people who can give a few hours of their time to ensure our runners have a great race in Buffalo. Our race is becoming well-known nationally, and much of that success is due to the local residents who volunteer during the race.”
Show your support for the runners as they make their way along the 26.2 mile marathon course, by volunteering at one or both of the activities held in conjunction with race. Volunteers are needed on Saturday, May 24th to assist with the packet pick-up and pasta party and on the day of the race for traffic control, water stations and finish line.
Parts of the proceeds raised from the race are donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Hospice Foundation of WNY and Breast Cancer Research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
The best part is, besides supporting a great cause, all volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and admission to the post-race party.
To volunteer, or for further information on the race, contact John Beishline at 716.694.5154 or send an email to BuffaloMarathon2008@yahoo.com. For a copy of the marathon course, visit www.buffalomarathon.com.

So after fireworks and celebrations on Friday and Saturday, some, if not many, Buffalonians will no doubt be hung over and tired. That’s okay. Oh no...here we go again....try to get to 9:30 Mass at the Newman Center on Elmwood...better yet...try to get back home downtown. It never ceases to amaze me...we live in the city, pay taxes and on several good weather weekends, we're trapped by races. And yes, I have heard all the arguements that the races bring thousands into the city but guess what...do you really think that they are site seeing; spending money; adding to our quaality of life? I don't think so. Just think...what else could all the policemen that are closing the streets be doing? Sorry....I ususally tout all the positives about our city but this is just one inconvinience too many. Why not plan the races for Amherst or Clarence instead of the Elmwood Village and Downtown?

IMADIVA...judging by your rationale, we should not have Allentown, St. Pat's, Thursday at the Square, Taste of Buffalo, Elmwood Arts Fest and (insert 100 other festivals here). Don't you think a lot of these runners stay in hotels, dine in our restaurants, shop in our stores???? Or do you think they sleep in their cars, wake up, run the race, then drive 10 hours home? And the Newman Center - how many weekends a year are you denied entrace to go worship because the street is blocked off??? IMADIVA should be changed to IMANIMBY.
