Riverside Readies For A Farmers' Market

I guess it was only a matter of time before Riverside pushed for a farmers' market. It's really another ideal location for one - far enough from the Bidwell Market, yet perfect for enticing walkers and bikers from Riverside and Black Rock. I still have a lot of people ask where Riverside is located. Many people are also unfamiliar with Black Rock. Squaw Island's beautiful park is just starting to land on the radar screens of many Buffalonians. Other nearby destinations include, Viking Lobster Company, Emily's Restaurant, and the Riverview Family Restaurant... all incredibly good places to eat morning, noon and night. Hopefully these local eateries will all get involved with market... this is good news for all.

I guess the real part about the market would be figuring out where to have it in Riverside. There are so many different little (and big) potential locations in and around Riverside Park. The planning is still in its infancy stages... that's why the organizers have set up a blog to learn about what sort of things the community would like to see take shape. How often would you go? What sort of goods would you like to see there? Where would you be coming from? Stuff like that. I believe Jason Cozza has been, in part, working on this for a while now. Great work!

good news, Riverside could use a little bit of love. Something to bring the neighbors together. This could be wonder. As per a location... I think you need to go with Riverside Park, probably near the light house at the corner of Crowley and T-Street (spoken like a local).

It is a place everyone knows about, feels safe going to and is pretty centralized in the neighborhood. Plus it can become a destination because of the park as well. The kids will want to go, you can tack it onto a morning run or dog walk etc. Placing it in a parking lot somewhere else probably won't have the same impact.

Well DUH after the success at Bidwell there should have been farmers markets springing out at every Olmstead Park, especially Hulmboldt, South Park and Cazenovia. The eastside and southside are desperate for markets of all kinds and so is the West Village like Front Park area or LaSalle area!

Heck the farmers markets could provide enough revenue to rebuild the long demolished Calvert Veaux structures indigineous to the parks as well as maintenance and restoration.

Great idea that needs refinement, police presence is required to provide security and peace of mind to both the shoppers and merchants. Access to convenient parking, adequate trash disposal and running water are a short list of things that would help this move forward. I shop and have merchandised products at a few different locations and these issues are universal.

On security, one incident can hinder any positive benefits, keeping the area civil and harassment free will go a long way. The Riverside Park area historically has been the focus of many good and bad perceptions the difference has been strict enforcement.

I don't know anyone from that area who would fear going to the park. Remember these events are held usually in the morning hours. So I doubt there would be a problem with crime or harassment. Just as there isn't one on Elmwood or Clinton-Bailey.

The use of the paved area around the lighthouse could really provide a neat atmosphere for the market. Vendors ringing around in a circle with the lighthouse in the middle. The stands and people won't cause undo harm to the grassy area as what happened at Bidwell. Highly visible from people traveling down Tonawanda street.

There is also the maintenance buildings for the children's pool. That should be able to provide for water and electricity only about 50' from paved areas.

PS chris69, there is no A in Olmsted...

Perhaps when and IF the Olmsted Conservancy finds funding to reconstruction the original Concourse in Riverside Park then the location would be better suited for that area in the north section of the park.

As for parking there is a whole street with of parking down Crowley, on both sides, as well as a parking lot across the street at Ross and Tonawanda, and if you wanted to walk a little ways there is plenty of parking on Hotaling Drive and down Tonawanda street. If you can't find parking around there you are just too picky.

I think the area where usually the concessions are would be better and I know of a number of people who would feel safer if there was an active police presence during these activities. Carrying a load of bags is a pain for some to travel too far, especially those who remember the joy and benefits that farmers markets offer.

Your right about one thing, the problem individuals of that area are usually sleeping in the morning or just getting arraigned.

One last thing, walking the dog is a good thing, taking one to a farmers market is chancy, from my personal experience having a dog marking the territory on someone's produce display really can get pissy, and taking a dump near by, can ruin an appetite for an impulsive buyer.

The place for a farmers market is simple- The historic market square, laid out as Black Rocks public marketplace in 1830. These linear parks at the corner of Niagara and Amherst are still in the original form and would be a highly visible and convienent location. The Amherst and Niagara bus routes coverge here and the adjacent "new" Market Square Park could handle any overflow

What about Squaw island? With its very successful little league baseball program Riverside park is filled with folks on Saturday morning, which is great on one hand but on the other hand parking becomes an issue. Sorry to bring up the P word but that is a real issue since the park is on the fringe of the populated area, not a problem if you are walking there but is a huge problem via fossil fuel. Squaw island is about as historic and beautiful as you can get; Black Rock preceeded Buffalo's eminence by quite a few years before bowing out to the queen city. It is a reclaimed treasure with areas of incredible fishing, opportunities for bird watching and breath taking views---right on the water! Support the Riverside Market, support the North Distrcit Councilmember's office on this endeavor and please go check out Squaw Island.
