For those concerned about the environment, the beauty of Buffalo, trees themselves, or just looking for something to do for a weekend, take a good look at Re-Tree WNY. This organization is dedicated to repairing the damage done by the storm in October of 2006 that some call the “October Surprise” but some prefer the name of “Thunder-snow.”

The organization says that around 30,000 trees were damaged or destroyed in the storm and they have already made huge steps toward replacing many of those trees. In 2007, they planted over 1,400 trees throughout the city of Buffalo. This year the planting of trees will be on May 3 and 4, but to sign up, you have to follow some simple rules.

After going here to register your group, access the online tree-planting database and scope out the area your group would like to plant trees in. Once reserved, choose a species of tree. Though there is no guarantee that your group will receive the tree you requested, the best of efforts will be made to provide the right tree to each group. If it is the first time your group has planted, there is a mandatory tree planting informational session by the Olmsted Parks Conservancy to attend on March 29 or April 5. After that, pick up your trees on May 2 or 3 and do some good for the area!

It seems like a lot, but it is a great opportunity for many to participate in a community-based activity. Re-Tree WNY is partnering with the Great American Clean-up and the city of Buffalo again to provide free trees and supplies. Many block clubs, schools, and local organizations take part to help restore the damage done and really, the more the merrier. All trees must be reserved by March 14, so what are you doing the first weekend in May?

I volunteered for this last yr on Squaw Island, and it was a great time! I met some great people, and they supplied Tim Hortons in the morning, and LaNova's for lunch.... I'll be there this year!

To this day I can't stand the "October surprise" storm that the mainstream media dubbed that storm. SUCH a boring name for what really happened. I still think Queenseyes "Arborgeddon" was the best. Re-Tree is doing a great job!

perhaps re-tree should leave or perhaps branch out. after all, i hope they arent all bark and no bite. a good idea no matter what, since this town seems like it cant see the forest for the trees.

Why would someone give me one-star ratings for saying I like a particular name better than another (One that was created on this website) and that I LIKE what Re-tree is doing? And giving "needles" a one start rating because they helped out last year?

leadi.. fret not about the stars.. They make no sense. I assume there are just a bunch of grouchny star gnomes out there that like to give one star ratings to anyone who has:

    1. helped with a project, volunteer or otherwise 2. doesn't live in the area. 3. doesn't own a car and fight the car fight.
