Retail Ready: 5 E. Huron Street

Exterior renovations are almost complete at the former Howard Shoes building, 5 East Huron Street. Iskalo Development is seeking a retailer or restaurant tenant for the striking 4,500 sq.ft. property. The building’s distinctive terra cotta façade has been repaired and new storefront windows were installed.
The interior of the building, with its highly distinctive terrazzo floors and ornate aquatic-themed wall frescos intact, will be finished to a tenant’s needs. Parking is available after 5:00 pm at the Electric Tower lot.
Located at the corner of E. Huron and Washington streets, the building was constructed in 1946 as a Waldorf Lunch, a popular restaurant at the time which had 75 locations throughout the northeast. The building later became home to Howard Shoes which it remained for many years until the venerable shoe store closed a few years ago. Iskalo acquired the building in 2006.
The building is located across the street from Electric Tower, the former Niagara Mohawk Building that the developer renovated for multi-tenant use. The property is one block from Main Street, the Hyatt, and Fountain Plaza office buildings. New residential developments including Holling Place, Ellicott Lofts, Ellicott Commons, IS Lofts, Oak School Lofts, Buehl Block and The Belesario are also nearby.

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …
Now that it has passed, the question is how does the “Bicycle Commuter Tax Act” affect me as an employer or employee on a daily basis.
During a time where healthy, environmentally sustainable and community friendly transportation options are more and more looked at as an effective way to encourage energy efficiency, to improve public health, to prevent congestion, to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and to improve community livability and safety, this is an essential step …

This morning, Barack Obama officially announced Senator Hillary Clinton will be nominated to serve as Secretary of State in the new administration. Assuming Senator Clinton is approved by the Senate for the cabinet position, Governor Paterson will appoint someone to fill her seat.

Looks great, I particularly love the redone apple. Very art deco.

Great that they preserved the historic Waldorf (apple) exterior and unique interior. Hopefully a tenant won't change that. Interesting history of Waldorf Lunch at: http://www.scripophily.net/walsysin.html

Striking? Maybe I'm missing something but I think it falls a little short of striking. Nice rehab... yes. Now what will it take for the Buffalo Urban League to paint over the back of their building? It looks like they've sampled a few colors. Now if only they could settle on one. My favorite is blue.

That is quite an improvement! Now all we need is a tenant to occupy it.

After viewing the photos, it appears as if the terracotta was merely patched and painted. Am I correct? If so, does the owner plan to have the tiles replaced in the future?

A 24 Hour restaurant in the heart of downtown would be awesome.

You have to see it in person. It really looks good. I was surprised, and I'm usually critical of the often cheap "restorations" done downtown (Courtyard Mall? Ugh!). The key will be the right tenant. Unfortunately, it doesn't get the traffic volume at this corner as it did when Genesee was open all the way to Niagara Square. I see a diner style place or a retro looking Tim Horton's, although a Timmy's is just 2 blocks away at Key Center.

It's awesome and a real example of how the whole area can come back. Next!

Great place for a 24 hr diner - like lake effect diner on Main. Young drunks need a place to get food after bars close on Chippewah.
