When Jim Guarino and his family opened The Coffee Bean Cafe on Main St. in the University District, the neighborhood was hopping. But as Chippewa drew increasing numbers of students downtown, business dwindled. So Jim, who has a passion for Creole cooking, started serving a New Orleans-style brunch which was soon named by Artvoice as the best brunch in the city.

Sensing he was on to something, Jim and his family closed the restaurant for extensive renovation .
