Recycle and Keep It Local

One of the best things about getting recycling bins out on Elmwood (other than the recycling part) is that a local crew was paid to design and build them. That means that these recycle bins are totally different than any of the other bins anywhere. It also means that some of the bin designs actually coincide with the neighboring storefronts. Take, for example, the one featured in this photo (Tyler and Mark Griffis stand behind it along with Kyle Mackiewicz). A couple of canines are featured on the front - maybe that's because Sonny's Doggie Bakery is located a couple of doors down. And on the side? A couple of skateboarders on their way to work are displayed. Each skateboarder is even carrying a briefcase - I'm sure that Sunday Skate loves the dedication.
Regardless of what each of the bins is displaying, it's just good to know that the devices are now out on the avenue. Let's hope that people can figure out that they are not just garbage cans and actually serve a recycling purpose.

This past week, I sang at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette, as part of the Elmwood Village Association's holiday tree lighting ceremony. It was the first time I ever sang my very personal song, “Who Wants To Cry At Christmas,” in front of the public. There were about 80 people gathered to hear me and my piano-playing friend Johnny Juarez present our “Chri …
As the global financial crisis throws economies around the world into recession, more and more industries are getting hit. Banks have been bailed out. Auto manufacturers are drowning. Newspapers, though, were ahead of their time as they've been dying slowly for more than a decade.
Warren Buffett, the legendary investor and owner of our hometown Buffalo News, acknowledged the fate of newspapers in his 2006 shareholder letter when he wrote:
Nevertheless, this operation faces …
As you look outside your office window today, you're likely overtaken by the sheer beauty. Blowing snow. People hunched over, freezing, trying to walk into a 30MPH wind. You're probably reading from the script of American Beauty:
Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it... and my heart is going to cave in.
Or, maybe you're just thinking "Oh f#@!, I have to drive home in this s*$#."
Either way, we're here to lift your spirits.

A two-story Delaware Avenue office building is getting a new face and a third story. The Buffalo Planning Board approved renovation plans for 334 Delaware Avenue at this morning's meeting. Owner 120 W. Tupper Street Inc. is undertaking the $1.2 million project. The bland building will get a new look and a glass third-floor addition.

Wow, these came out even better than I anticipated. The real task will be making sure that they are emptied on a regular basis. Great job!

haha Gotta laugh at the comment ratings on this site. I said these were awesome, and it got me two votes for one star. Guess I gotta say they suck??

@GraphicRage......You make a comment just to get a rating? What happens to the person with the most ratings in the end...do they get a prize?
On topic though - this is a great idea....hopefully it will help w/the recycling effort in the city.

I gave you five stars but only three lit up. The star system on this site doesn't work right and makes no sense sometimes.

No, I don't make a comment to get a rating, I could care less at what my rating is really but just think how others rate is silly. If they don't agree with you, it's a one star, instead of based on the merit of discussion.
Fredrico, the stars are based on an average, so if everyone gave me one star and you gave me 5, i'd probably only have a two. :-)
There's folks on here who I completely disagreed with but I gave them 3 or 4 stars because their comment made me think or they made a good point that I didn't necessarily agree with.
Anyway, back to recycling...

@fredrico, the star ratings from what I can tell all get averaged together, so if someone gives a 1 star and someone else gives them a 5 star, their comment shows up with 3 stars.

I LOVE the bins - and I hate to complain but you can see in the pics as of yesterday there were still no containers inside the bins for trash/recyclables

Recycling bins need to be implemented all across the city, along with more garbage receptacles. There could definitely be more garbage bins in Allentown. It's little things like this that go a long way to improving the look (and smell) of a city.

yes attractive garbage cans in all of downtown (especialy delaware) and allentown, and main near ub north and the canisius college area and all major bus stops would do so much for keeping this town clean. i cant tell you how many times i've had to carry a coffee cup for 10 blocks before i found a trash can downtown
