Ready to Tell Buffalo’s Story

It was a bitterly cold morning January 20, when thirty people stood in Niagara Square, huddled against the Lake Erie winds. They tried to picture themselves in sixth months time, leading their own tour of downtown Buffalo, wearing a short sleeve shirt, sunglasses, and sweating under the hot summer sun. It was a very difficult image to hold onto. Nevertheless, the 2007 Buffalo Tours docent class is finished, the exams are handed in, and on Saturday four more docent trainees passed their graduation tour. In the photo, Judie Takacs is pointing out some architectural details of City Hall to Mary Ann Sandoro.
This year’s docent class, the second for Buffalo Tours, prepared docents for the Downtown Revealed: Appreciating Buffalo’s Architecture tour. The class members devoted 10 Saturday mornings to readings, lectures, field trips, and practice presentations, not to mention hours of practice and study as homework. This year’s class came from all over, from Clarence to the downtown neighborhood, and one member even commuted from Rochester.
Buffalo Tour’s 2007 season will kick off this weekend with a press conference on Friday at The Church and a tour of Central Terminal on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Downtown Revealed introduces to locals and visitors alike the best architecture downtown has to offer. This tour will run six days a week in July and August, weekdays at 10 a.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. The tours will meet at the Market Arcade, 617 Main Street. Docents will also be giving tours to school groups.
The docent class of 2007 will soon be out on the street telling downtown’s story. Please join us for a tour this summer.

Ever since the Falafel Bar opened on Allen Street, it was only a matter of time before the Elmwood location was no longer for this world. I spoke to owner, Oded Rauvenpoor, who told me that the decision to close came when he was at a crossroads. He found himself happy with his Allentown diggs, but began eying another part of the city for the Elmwood restaurant. In the end, Oded decided that he wanted to try his hand in the University District (3476 Main Street). I guess there was …
Now that it has passed, the question is how does the “Bicycle Commuter Tax Act” affect me as an employer or employee on a daily basis.

Will the docents be pointing to the empty site where the Balcom/Chandler House once sat and telling visitors "We tore down a circa 1852 structure which could have been easily moved to the Erie Canal Harbor site and restored instead of building crap replicas". How come the Preservation Coalition didnt step in ? I dont think we will ever learn!
