Pugs are sausages with legs. At least that’s what Sandy Hertel, owner of Elmwood Village Fabrics told me earlier today. She sent me an email a couple of days ago to remind me that “40 little pop-eyed, curly-tail pork roasts with legs” would be congregating at the BuffOLA dog park to celebrate ‘all things pug’. The turnout was pretty spectacular – not only were there a countless number of pugs running around, there were also a variety of other small breeds, or toys, joining in on the fun.

On the surface this meet-up was a blast for the dogs and their owners, but there was something even more special about this occasion that some people might not be aware of. Since the dog park has opened, this has become the only place (that I know of) where an event like this can take place in the city. I spoke to a number of dog owners who told me that up until now theses meet-ups were being held solely in the suburbs.

That’s great for folks living outside Buffalo… and now city-dwellers can show off their own fancy diggs. I spoke to one of the event organizers who told me that she works downtown but rarely spends much time in the city outside of work. She was extremely excited to be able to help showcase the LaSalle off leash area, which, she told me was, “Perfect, especially now that there are Abner Hours for smaller breeds.” Abner hours (30lb dogs and smaller) take place between the hours of 1pm and 3pm. Ultimately the plan is to have two separate romping areas to keep the large and small dogs apart.

pug-party-buffalo-ny-dog-pu.jpg Pug owners are not the only ones who are taking advantage of the BuffOLA dog park. The next meet-up that I am aware of is going to be dedicated to Chihuahuas - the smallest breed of dog in the world. I would think that any number of the recently opened doggy daycares, bakeries, specialty shops, etc. would jump at the chance to promote these events. When the BuffOLA park relocates to its new home (within LaSalle Park, we may just be covering Pug Pool Parties as well as an event known as Pugoween – a Pug costume party. Pug owners share their infatuation with each other through local online sites like The Pug Meet-Up. And if you’re into Chihuahuas, then sign up for their meet-ups. It’s a great way to meet new friends… and who knows, maybe the dog owners will even find a new friend or two.

Don’t forget to mark the following event on your calendar:

“Sunday, July 13 - Join the Run for Rover - walk with your dog or run a 5K with dog lovers in LaSalle Park in support of the Pet Emergency Fund” – Reed Stevens

It's great that there's such a place for dogs and owners to meet up. Thanks to all the devoted BufOLA volunteers and board members and the Pug Meet-Up organizers as well. We had a ball!

It's nice to know all those pooches are crapping in our water supply. Who's bright idea was it to put a dog run there?

Matthewjohnp, Actually, the Buffalo Police K9 Corp used to be housed at this site. You can make out the Colonel Ward Pumping Station in the background of these pictures: http://www.bpdthenandnow.com/k9unit.html

Jack is correct in that the site behind the current park was previously used for the K9 Corp training. Regardless, there is not only grass and soil, but under that is a thick slab of concrete that protect from anything leeching into the water. In addition it was the Water Authority who provided the park site - so it was the Authority's bright idea.

I think we should be more upset about the crap that literally flows into the lake and river which goes right into some municipalities intakes. Odds are anything put onto this site is well broken down and digested before reaching even the cement..

I am the organizer of the Buffalo Pug Meetup. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this event. Looks like there was fun for all. If anyone is out there with pugs and you are not a member, please feel free to look us up at. www.meetup.com/54 or you can google us at "buffalo pug meetup"! We usually try to get together every other month in the winter (indoor location) and outside in the summer most months.

For those concerned about the water supply, there are plans to move the entire BuffOLA dog park to another location in the LaSalle Park area.

What a great gift to Buffalo the off lease area is. I was there yesterday with my pug, and I intend to make the trip into the city to use it often.

I met some other area residents and my dog got to socialize not only with other pugs, but with beautiful dogs of many breeds..

I will be very happy when Abner hours are no longer neededbecause there is a special designated area for little breeds.

For all worried about the water..please send donations in for the fencing needed to move the OLA.

This is something Buffalo can brag about ..

I am a member of the Pug Meet up and was at the meet up yesterday. I was amazed at the turn out. It is a shame that small breed dogs only have about 6 hours a week allotted to them. I know they are working on moving the dog park to accommodate us and I am very grateful. I will be bringing my pugs back there more often. And I recommend anyone with pugs to join the meet up group. Its a great way to get together and socialize your pug.

I wish there were more pictures posted.

are the abner hours daily or bi weekly? there seems to be some discrepancy on this and the buffola website does not even mention the abner hours. thanks to anyone who can clear this up for me.

Abner Hours (Small Dog Hours) are as follows: - Sundays from 1:00PM to 3:00PM - Tuesdays from 4:00PM to 6:00PM

These special hours are reserved for dogs 30lbs or less. (All others hours are open to dogs of all sizes.)

Of course, the goal is to have a separate area dedicated to small dogs (less than 30lbs) in the new dog park. Until then, Abner Hours provide time when the little dogs reign over the park. This the time to bring smaller dogs who might be too tiny or too timid to hang out with larger dogs.

(For some of the smallest breeds, playing with large breed dogs might not be safe, as they could get hurt purely by accident during "normal" hours.)

Hope to see you @ Abner Hours! It's a blast. It was totally awesome to see all of those pugs!
