Prometheus 233 To Spark New Business

Prometheus 233 To Spark New Business

Story Options

The studio is located within the City Grill building, a gentle walk from anywhere on Main Street Downtown. It is a spacious New York loft-style office that is now home to a unique service and an ambitious, creative team. Sean Hus Var, owner, photographer and Buffalo native, has developed a business that plans to change the face of Buffalo photography.

“The concept came about because of the understanding that people don't have an organized way to to get work done. We open our doors so that people may become members and utilize our studio. Things like printing, expensive equipment, marketing – all of these things keep people from their main purpose, which is getting their work out there. We provide the necessary means, at discounted rates, so that photographers can service their clients better. They also have access to different vehicles, a website, blog, to spread the word. We are basically a car dealership. Put ten large car dealerships together and they will all receive more business. Roll everyone into one studio, one atmosphere, they will all be recognized and relate to each other because they are using a similar service,” said Sean Hus Var.

Hus Var believes that the studio will also extend well in New York City where the other hub will be located. Because he has had many business ventures here and in NYC, he has the ability to promote the members of the studio in both places in whatever type of photography that they practice. The studio will take on any commercial work that the photographers are commissioned to complete and have the facilities necessary to do so. Buffalo has not yet had a focus on fashion photography for example, but tends towards fine art pieces. Hus Var stated, “We feel that the studio will be a crossover of entertainment and fine arts, there is a lot of crossing of those paths.”

Prometheus employees are in the business simply for love of the work. All of the jobs that come into the studio are distributed to the members, none are taken by Hus Var. He is currently working on a cleverly devised coffee table book. Speaking of clever, the name Prometheus 233 is derived from the ancient God Prometheus who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to man. As punishment, Zeus had him tied to a rock and every night an eagle would emerge from the sky to eat his liver. Because he was a God, his liver grew back each and every day. Likewise, the studio gives it's members the tools they need to have a lasting impact with their clients. As for 233, it is the Celsius temperature at which paper burns, but is also a uranium isotope. Hus Var adds, “There is a moon named Prometheus that passes through the rings of Saturn. As it does, it pulls the dust from the rings outward so that it actually seems as if the Prometheus is stealing the rings.”

The opening reception is scheduled for Thursday and the Prometheus 233 team has some innovative entertainment up their sleeve. Aside from art work by the studio photographers, a specially tailored photo booth will be set up for guests to have their picture taken. The photographs will then be displayed on monitors around the space and the money paid into the photo booth will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Hus Var stated that they also plan to have some sort of confessional and a set designed where guests can take shots.

Attend the reception and become acquainted with Prometheus 233. They are in search of photographers, set designers and models, but those who are curious about this new downtown fixture should attend as well.

OMG is there anything this Hus Queer Doo can't 'DO" .......I mean talk about exciting entertainment - a photo booth....at the opening, of a 'photo studio' ........why, it's sheer unmitigated genius!

NOT to mention the lesson in Greek mythology and the charming images it conjures of Hannibal Lector, Fava Beans, and Chianti! I went to Old Navy last week and I didn't learn nothin' useful about the ocean. This guys got class !

I think this liver-less, regenerating Promethean sounds like just what Buffalo needs, someone brilliant with "MANY" unspecified past business ventures in Buffalo and NYC.

I too believe Buffalo has been poised on the precipice for some time... ready to 'Splooge' onto the world's fashion stage. So~ step off Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Pittsburgh, you outre hangers on!

Why, just look at the fashion resources in downtown B'lo alone.....I mean, there's,,,,and then there's.......well the Galleria is way happening, and cutting edge ~ like that new toy store where all the dolls look like crack babies in a neo-natal I.C.U., neatly displayed in plastic baby warmers, and a corpulent sales lady waits on you in garish hospital scrubs with a stethescope! I bet they dont have one of those on 'Rodeo Drive'? Do they, Dick Avedon ?

Question? Do you suppose his new coffee table book might be a coffee table book that actually looks like a coffee table, I hope its a coffee table book that actually looks like a coffee table, and maybe smells like the beach, ''cuz that would be waaaay FAAAAABULOUSLY Kool !

Poor job on the web site? That's an understatement. Just how hard is it to capture an arresting image of a model with a face and body like that?!?!?

    Score: 13 Photograph credits HusQueerDoo ..12 Joey B ................1

Where is all the work of member photog's?

Surely this maverick start-up-up-start must have networked successfully with our regions wealth of Shutter-bugging Elites?

""All of the jobs that come into the studio are distributed to the members, none are taken by Hus Var."" I smell mendacity and an oily used car salesman !

How about adding some Kinko-type services in the lobby to draw in foot traffic? That promised copy store expansion on Court Street never materialized and there's a growing downtown market for it.

MJ Come on. This post is very forced and it was an open critique. As someone who works for an interactive agency, you expect comments like this when you put your firm out there. After all, if we just sat around and kissed each others add...where would we be.

As author of this post, I can attest to the fact that it was not at all forced. Rather, I will be attending the Prometheus opening tonight and have been looking forward to it. As for Sean Hus Var's other business ventures, they are not mentioned in the article for the simple reason that they happen to fall outside of the city limit. He in fact does have a successful printing company in the suburbs and a few others in New York City. The coffee table book topic remains undiscussed due to its early stages of formation, but I can assure you that Hus Var was not commissioned to create this coffee table for his LACK of creativity. What is so wrong with supporting those that are supporting Buffalo. We all do live here and these bitter remarks can potentially be turning other businesses, looking to enter the Queen City, away. Do not get me wrong, I am the first to admit I love a good debate. But only when those that are debating have a solid ground to stand on.

    Dear LauraSargent,

Your post in defense of this silly fluff advertisement does little to legitimize your writing skills or the baseless optimism for this business venture. Get back to me after the liquidation auction when this project tanks.

    >>>The studio is located within the City Grill building, a gentle walk from anywhere on Main Street Downtown.

It is at the butt end of Main Street that is basically deserted unless there is something going on at Pilot Field or the Arena, and you could get blown into traffic if you walk there during the winter, the bitter lake winds are so fierce. Its a long haul from NOWHERE.

    >>>We are basically a car dealership.

You have me there, this concept sounds every bit as classy and sophisticated as a Billy Fucillo ad.

    >>>Because he has had many business ventures here and in NYC, he has the ability to promote the members of the studio in both places in whatever type of photography that they practice.

    and

    >>>As for Sean Hus Var's other business ventures, they are not mentioned in the article for the simple reason that they happen to fall outside of the city limit.

You cant have it both ways, are his other business ventures relevant or not? If so name them, if not, shut up about them. Vaguery and allusion are tools of the trade for snake oil and used car salesmen.

    >>>Prometheus employees are in the business simply for love of the work.

The pay is below the living wage or the staff is all volunteer. There isnt anyone elses creative work on the website, and the 'photo of the day' has not changed since you posted this piece.

    >>>All of the jobs that come into the studio are distributed to the members, none are taken by Hus Var.

So why are 12 out of 13 photos on the sight the work of Hus Var, and why no mention of any other artists on the difficult to navigate and amateurish web site?

I forwarded this post without comment to an associate in NYC who works consistently in the commercial film industry and has for the last 12 years. He has produced commercials here in Buffalo, and his reaction was just as laughable as mine. It is full of drippy excess, and lacking in believable content. Perhaps it is just your saccharine and unsophisticated writing style that saps the project of any credibility.

Whining "We all do live here and these bitter remarks can potentially be turning other businesses" give me a break, it just confirms that you are a child playing at an adult game. Why is it that EVERYONE associated with BR is unable to redress critique intelligibly and so pathologically optimistic and without discretion? You put a badly written piece that is a thinly veiled self promotional press release for a marginally viable business - and your defense is to obfuscate and say 'Shhhhhhh, the world may be reading!'

Give me a break. If you want to be taken seriously, then WRITE seriously.

why is every a-hole taking this so seriously. no wonder every art business fails in this city. what's your f'n deal? you obviously have a lot of time on your hands to criticize others at how poor they are at their job. i'm guessing you expect a not-for profit magazine, in buffalo, to only use pulitzer prize winning writers. get real. you seem to have so much to say, well then you should apply for a job at BR so we can all judge you. or perhaps you should just create your own blog and we can learn from it. this is just some press release for someone trying make it in the 'thriving' art world of buffalo. why invest so much time knocking it???

    duke,

I have wondered why this crap bothers me so much too, but the larger this sight gets and the more people that view it, the more unjustified 'credibility' it gets.

This is a silly post, written by a silly young lady, about a silly buiisness proposal, and it bothers me because this nonsense does not make the city look progressive and un-and-coming~ it makes us look bush league and reaching beyond our abilities. There are all kinds of credible arts and commerce endeavors in the region.....they just dont bother posting flatulant advertisement on this site.

i'm going to go ahead and sort of disagree with you. buffalo itself is bush league...you've done a sufficient job pointing that out. plus, i'd like to know about these other arts endeavors b/c i havent seen much good art come out of this city in many years. instead of bashing every idea, perhaps you could offer some viable suggestions of "progressive and up and coming" services that the city needs. we all know whats going to happen when you do tho, they'll all laugh at you just like you are laughing at this post. i believe the purpose of BR is to promote buffalo in a positive light, regardless of the quality of the product. you're wasting your time taking a personal vendetta against laura and her writing ability. dont blame her for posting "fluff" blame BR for promoting what you might consider to be shite. she's just doing her job. people in buffalo are cynical enough...why continue to promote that?? its like saying "this tastes horrible" then handing it to your friend and say " taste this" ...whats the point? i understand many of your points, but you're wasting your breathe...let it go.

first of all -if you don't want comments, pro AND con, then leave off with all this bloggery entirely. it's juvenile to expect only positive glowing commentary, and largely unproductive. no amount of congratulatory back slapping, and high 5ing will make a bad idea, badly presented, anything but what it is.

second, i have made a pretty good case that this post is misleading at best, and out right lies at worst. it is insulting to be pandered to with half truths and sophistry by Br ~ which claims to aspire to a better Buffalo through integrity and progressive social interaction. this is the same ol same ol we have lived with for years from the Buffalo News printing anything anyone from city hall or a powerful developer gives them to print. only now we get Br-Bs in an interactive form.

you may remember that I took Newell to task over the 'downtown flea market' idea earlier this year, and the patently false assertions he made about its need, public demand, and viability. since the season is fast drawing to a close, it seems my concerns were well born out. instead of doing proper do diligence before printing plans and a desire for such a project, they went off half cocked, and now the project is an advertised failure, which the critics everyone cares so much about can point to and gloat over.

it is similarly difficult to see the validity of your criticism which attacks my message but addresses none of my points specifically.

as for my seeming obsession, it may stem from a strongly held belief, stated more eloquently than I by a great thinker:

The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools. -Herbert Spencer, English Philosopher (1820-1903)

maybe next time, one more person will think before they type.

mjs: I'm queer as they come and been out my entire life, advocating for gay rights and the civil liberties of all Americans.

My satiric reference to 'queer' was in reaction to the obviously 'homo-erotic' image used in this promotion. I'm attacking the post because of my bias against 'chicanery' not sexual preference. This article is misleading and badly crafted. Who are all these 'members'? Hus Var has 12 out of 13 images on the website.

It's a vague, naive, reaching business plan, and upon the vaguest scrutiny filled with misleading half truths. Why no mention that Hus Var already had a similar business in the Tri- Main building...if we are to believe that this man has a successful business track record. Very suspicious omission.

I think the Copy Store did expand. The corner space (NE Franklin/Court) is vacant because they moved next door to where Southerland's used to be located.
