Last week I met Richard Blanc, the director of an up-and-coming physical therapy practice. Not long after the introduction, Richard began to tell me the story of how he ended up in Buffalo after being born in Haiti and spending a good part of his life in Brooklyn, NY. Before moving to Buffalo Richard had only “driven through” sections of the city that (to him) looked like any other rustbelt city in America. Then he met our Mayor Byron Brown (pre-mayor days) who suggested that Richard take a second look at Buffalo (details in podcast). He was assured that Buffalo, if looked at in the right light, was a city of opportunities. Richard took him up on his suggestion and came to visit.
When he arrived he saw the city in a totally different light. “Buffalo is a lot different when you’re not just driving through,” he told me. “I saw that it was an inexpensive place to live and work, and although people told me not to, I began to invest time in the city. Where I once saw rustbelt buildings, I now saw beautiful architecture.” Richard moved to Buffalo three years ago, and when he did, he brought a great passion for the area with him. Today Richard runs a successful and growing physical therapy practice at the corner of North and Elmwood called Renovatio. Renovatio is going through a growth surge that will see the facility’s current 2700sq.’ absorb another 1300sq.’ Richard is also featured in a public access program on Saturdays called Health Matters. Check out the podcast and find out what went through his mind when he opted to move to Buffalo to launch his enterprise.
Renovatio is located at 191 North Street Suite 206. 716.882.6000

This past week, I sang at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette, as part of the Elmwood Village Association's holiday tree lighting ceremony. It was the first time I ever sang my very personal song, “Who Wants To Cry At Christmas,” in front of the public. There were about 80 people gathered to hear me and my piano-playing friend Johnny Juarez present our “Chri …
As the global financial crisis throws economies around the world into recession, more and more industries are getting hit. Banks have been bailed out. Auto manufacturers are drowning. Newspapers, though, were ahead of their time as they've been dying slowly for more than a decade.
Warren Buffett, the legendary investor and owner of our hometown Buffalo News, acknowledged the fate of newspapers in his 2006 shareholder letter when he wrote:

As you look outside your office window today, you're likely overtaken by the sheer beauty. Blowing snow. People hunched over, freezing, trying to walk into a 30MPH wind. You're probably reading from the script of American Beauty:
Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it... and my heart is going to cave in.
Or, maybe you're just thinking "Oh f#@!, I have to drive home in this s*$#."
Either way, we're here to lift your spirits.
If you'd li …
