Plan A Weekly Event On Main Street

There's a great opportunity to bring people down to Main Street on the weekends. The park featured in the top photo is located at the corner of Main and Huron. The park is actually very well laid out. There are trees, a statue and park benches. It is also somewhat protected by the wind. This would make an excellent space for a weekly outdoor music event. A place like this would be perfect for a variety of musicians to gather. With a couple of sponsors and support from The City, this could easily become a weekend draw without much effort.
Directly across from the park (also on Main) is the Hyatt Hotel. Within the Hyatt is Harriet's Ice Bar. There are tables and seats already set up outside for anyone who would want to come down and listen to music while enjoying some food and a cocktail. I spoke to Councilman Brian Davis about seeing whether we can get a couple of the fountains turned on over the weekends. He said that he would look into it.
The Metro Rail runs right by this location. Plus it is easily visible from a drivable cross street. Maybe we could call a couple of our food vendor friends to see if they would be interested in obtaining a few permits. Who knows... if people started counting on it some more benches could be added for seating. I would imagine that someone in the music business would be perfect at putting an effort like this together. There are already a number of excellent sponsor perspectives nearby... including Labatt and The Hyatt. If you are interested in pursuing the idea further, give me a shout here.

As you look outside your office window today, you're likely overtaken by the sheer beauty. Blowing snow. People hunched over, freezing, trying to walk into a 30MPH wind. You're probably reading from the script of American Beauty:
Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it... and my heart is going to cave in.
Or, maybe you're just thinking "Oh f#@!, I have to drive home in this s*$#."
Either way, we're here to lift your spirits.

A two-story Delaware Avenue office building is getting a new face and a third story. The Buffalo Planning Board approved renovation plans for 334 Delaware Avenue at this morning's meeting. Owner 120 W. Tupper Street Inc. is undertaking the $1.2 million project. The bland building will get a new look and a glass third-floor addition.
At an after school program recently, some kids were doing homework, some were on computers and some were in the gym. But a small group of fourth-graders were designing and building boats out of household products- plastic cups, construction paper, and tape. They had been building and modifying their boats throughout the week, trying a few different design and construction plans. Now they were ready to race them across a tub of water, using a fan to power them across. After deal …
Larry Griffis III is a well-known Buffalo figure whose experience with steel is not only his passion, but his birthright. Some may know of his father’s sculpture park in South Buffalo, founded in the 60s, but his son has taken up the torch and is now a world-renowned sculpture. What started with the father has continued with the son. Griffis III’s work is starting to appear in spots in Buffalo and now, to see one of his works, you need look no further than Forest Lawn Chapel.

Why? Are people hard up for something to do? Everyone I know has too many events, festivals, performances, movies, walks, talks, and other activities to squeeze in. Why dilute the market with another event?
Just because there's an empty space, does it need to be filled? I think people want to spend their weekends away from the workplace and/or places that seem like workplaces (office buildings). They want to enjoy nature, or a new neighborhood, not concrete.
A train running by rarely enhances a live performance.

Buffalo's downtown has suffered from a lack of activity for decades. Anything that can be done to liven up the area deserves encouragement. If you live in any city, there is no such thing as too much going on.

There are very few stores and restaurants along Main Street, and those that are there are rarely open on the weekends. I am not sure what we would gain by transferring people from other venues to visit Main Street. I don't believe that it will do much to change perception, in fact it will probably reinforce perceptions that Main Street is a desolate wasteland. Bring people to Main Street on Saturday to join the three homeless guys who are too lazy to move to Chippewa or Elmwood to beg for change.
I believe that if we want to make something happen along Main Street, then we need to see progress with the storefronts, the restaurants, theaters, stadium, etc. This is not a "they come first and then build it" scenario. We need to build a permanent destination and a new tradition. I think the waterfront will work as an interim place until the new Casino is built. Unfortunately, development will probably spread towards the Casino instead of up Main Street when it finally opens. Which leads me to my final question for all, is there any real hope for Main Street?

There are things happening on Main St.
And I believe that more and more good things are going to happen.
How is it that some people can complain about nothing happening and too much happening?

I went to a cocktail party in that park, before an event at the Hyatt...it was a charming little place to hold a function.
