people places plants

'The magazine for Northeast Gardeners', people places plants (based in Maine), is currently featuring a sweet spread on Buffalo's Garden Walk. The article touts the (relative) overnight success of The Walk - growing from 19 gardens in '95 to almost 300 gardens today. Of course the opening paragraph mentions The Bills and chicken wings, but it also acknowledges that Buffalo is "The City of Good Neighbors". From there the glowing article goes on to describe the neighborhoods... the side streets... the koi ponds... and the people. Yes, we are getting a lot of attention for people who are active in our communities.
The image on the front cover is from a garden located at 65 Lancaster Avenue. Then there are images of gardens found at 224 park Street and 755 West Delevan. Another great image shown is that of a garden found at 167 Richmond. Distribution for the magazine is 65,000 copies, covering Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island & New York. Congratulations to the Garden Walk Committee for snagging some welcome exposure for The Walk.

This past week, I sang at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette, as part of the Elmwood Village Association's holiday tree lighting ceremony. It was the first time I ever sang my very personal song, “Who Wants To Cry At Christmas,” in front of the public. There were about 80 people gathered to hear me and my piano-playing friend Johnny Juarez present our “Chri …
As the global financial crisis throws economies around the world into recession, more and more industries are getting hit. Banks have been bailed out. Auto manufacturers are drowning. Newspapers, though, were ahead of their time as they've been dying slowly for more than a decade.
Warren Buffett, the legendary investor and owner of our hometown Buffalo News, acknowledged the fate of newspapers in his 2006 shareholder letter when he wrote:
Nevertheless, this operation faces …
As you look outside your office window today, you're likely overtaken by the sheer beauty. Blowing snow. People hunched over, freezing, trying to walk into a 30MPH wind. You're probably reading from the script of American Beauty:
Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it... and my heart is going to cave in.
Or, maybe you're just thinking "Oh f#@!, I have to drive home in this s*$#."
Either way, we're here to lift your spirits.
If you'd li …
A two-story Delaware Avenue office building is getting a new face and a third story. The Buffalo Planning Board approved renovation plans for 334 Delaware Avenue at this morning's meeting. Owner 120 W. Tupper Street Inc. is undertaking the $1.2 million project. The bland building will get a new look and a glass third-floor addition.

my only comment here is that there are multiple blooming seasons here: spring, summer fall. So we as a city should not have a problem with coordinating Buffalo neighborhood garden walks for the entire growing season.
There are multiple neighborhoods ... not just allentown...that have garden shows...and we could easily showcase westside...in spring, eastside in summer and southside in late summer with the southern tier mountains perfect for changing color of the leaves.

You go right ahead, chris69, and start that great coordination project. And, by the way, the Garden Walk Buffalo is not only Allentown, muffinhead. It goes from Grant/Elmwood/Forest all the way to City Hall. And, the Garden Walk Buffalo is the largest, free Garden Walk in the US. And, the time, coordination, and results like the Garden Walk Buffalo book and DVD show a progression of many years of development. So, chris69, you go right ahead and coordinate this project you have decided is a easy piece. Put your money where you mouth is, dude. Garden Walk Buffalo is an all volunteer group of citizens, not the city, you dolt. The city needs to govern, not get in to the Garden Walk business.
