Pedal Power

When I first heard that a 'Big Bike Ride' was coming to Buffalo, I assumed that a bunch of bikers were heading out for a trek. Then I was told that the riders, 29 total, would all be on the same bike - a bike the size of a school bus measuring 30 feet by 8 feet. The vehicle has a captain who makes sure that the ride goes smoothly and the fundraising effort is a success. At this point this is not a recreational ride as much as it is used to raise money for needy non-profits. Actually, if you think about it, this Big Bike is the perfect way for donors to get some fresh air and have the ride of their lives.
Colden Ray, from AIDS Community Services of WNY, told me that, "The way the event works is similar to fundraising walks, runs, and rides, in that teams raise pledges to ride the bike. This year we’re focusing on Big Kahunas—community leaders, corporate leaders, and anyone interested in a bigger challenge to support HIV/AIDS services. The Heart & Stroke Foundation in Canada has been doing Big Bike events for years and they’ve raised millions for their programs."
Apparently, this is was the first time that the Canadian contraption ever made its way into the US. The riders left from Shanghai Red’s and pedaled their way to "new developments along the waterfront and travels through downtown—through Lafayette Square, down Court St., and through Niagara Square. Now that's quite a distance, but when you have an army of people on one Big Bike, then the task is not so bad. When I saw this group, they were screaming and shouting (and pedaling) - it was a terrific scene all together.

Four games in 6 nights certainly marks a rough patch in a schedule, and the Buffalo Sabres showed what kind of toll it can take by losing to the Nashville Predators 2-0 on home ice.
To be fair, both teams played an uninspired game from start to finish, which makes sense when you consider that the Predators played 3 games in 5 nights. There were few exciting scoring chances on either side of the ice and the game's pace was both stilted and broken. It was likely due to the coache …
From Hoss: "Is Kabob and Curry opening at the old Mondo location on Elmwood, or Main? I haven't been to their primary eatery on Transit, but I hear they serve the best Indian food around."
Kabab and Curry will open in about two weeks at the former Mondo Video location... approximately mid-December. I understand that it will be more of a take-out operation than the existing restaurant located on Transit Road. It appears as if the Transit eatery attracts a lot of university student …

This past week, I sang at Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Elmwood and Lafayette, as part of the Elmwood Village Association's holiday tree lighting ceremony. It was the first time I ever sang my very personal song, “Who Wants To Cry At Christmas,” in front of the public. There were about 80 people gathered to hear me and my piano-playing friend Johnny Juarez present our “Chri …
As the global financial crisis throws economies around the world into recession, more and more industries are getting hit. Banks have been bailed out. Auto manufacturers are drowning. Newspapers, though, were ahead of their time as they've been dying slowly for more than a decade.
Warren Buffett, the legendary investor and owner of our hometown Buffalo News, acknowledged the fate of newspapers in his 2006 shareholder letter when he wrote:
Nevertheless, this operation faces …

buffalo2wheeler, send an email to cray@aidscommunityservices.com for information about next year's ride.
I have a slideshow from the ride posted at http://acswny.blogspot.com. It feels weird for the first five seconds because you're up higher than on a regular bike, but once we got moving I had a great time.
